The Health Technician (Urology) primarily assists in the urological care of inpatients and outpatients, managing daily operations and technical activities in Urology Clinics. Duties include performing clinical procedures like urologic exams, catheter care, and handling specialized equipment under physician guidance. The technician also provides non-clinical support, coaching staff, distributing workloads, and coordinating with the Nurse Manager to ensure efficient clinic operations.
Duties
Prepares instruments for the full range of Urology procedures, sets up for the procedure and handles the instrumentation.
Prepares, labels, and documents pathological specimens for appropriate laboratory testing.
Operates Urodynamic equipment and performs Uroflow, CMG, and EMG testing.
Maintains proper levels of disposable and non-disposable supplies. Ensures that endoscopic instruments are maintained in sufficient quantity and in good order.
Performs proper cleaning, sterilization, storage, and maintenance of fiberoptic instruments, light sources, and auxiliary equipment. Submits work orders and requests for replacements.
Reads, analyzes, and interprets SOPs, directives, policies, and regulations to disassemble, pre-clean, high-level disinfection, and storage of reusable medical equipment.
Interviews patients and reviews records prior to all procedures to determine the presence of allergies or contraindications.
Coordinates with Infection Control Services regarding policies and procedures. Educates Urology personnel on the usage of endoscopic instruments and environmental sanitation.
Assists co-workers to perform urologic procedures using equipment properly and manage patient flow efficiently.
Maintains supportive relationships with patients, explains procedures to be performed and gives necessary instructions, answers questions, and assists in resolving patient complaints.
Participates in proper patient identification and procedural site verification using Universal Protocol and Time-Out procedures.
Complies with all Infection Control Policies and Procedures. Educates students and new personnel on aseptic technique, hand hygiene, and proper PPE.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement.
GS-06 grade level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes: handling, cleaning, high level disinfection, and maintaining endoscopic equipment, including multiple catheters; using aseptic and sterile techniques and must apply these principles during endoscopic procedures, endoscopic surgery, and minor surgical procedures; handling various specimens for culture, cytology, and other special studies in a safe and efficient manner; AND charting vital signs, wound care, surgical staple removal, Urodynamic equipment, insertion, proper maintenance, applying knowledgeable of multiple types of catheters and problem solving Foley catheter malfunction.
There is no educational substitution for the GS-06 level.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: Work involves various physical demands requiring the employee to be versatile in the many functions performed. These include sedentary work performed at a desk with intermittent standing, walking, bending, and lifting of lightweight records and supplies (rarely exceeding 25 pounds). The demands may be unpredictable requiring the incumbent to adjust accordingly. May be required to assist in transporting and transferring patients from wheelchair or stretcher to the examination environment. Will be responsible for moving urology equipment as necessary. Sufficient hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity to assemble and clean endoscopic instruments is required. The ability to bend, stoop, stretch, lift, and position patients is frequently necessary.
