The SPC is a member of the Suicide Prevention Team, as outlined in MCP 116- 05 and 116-04, and is programmatically and professionally responsible to the Social Work Supervisor/Suicide Prevention Coordinator (SPC) within Psychiatry Service. This position is only open to current permanent VHA employees of the Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center and affiliated Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOC).
Duties
Administrative Program Duties:
Serve as facility Subject Matter Expert (SME) and Point of Contact (POC) for matters related to suicide, including prevention, intervention, postvention efforts, education and outreach, and suicide behavior and death reporting; collaborating with other SPCs and VA at-large to share best practices through multiple touch points
Implement facility suicide prevention strategies in accordance with VHA policies
Function as the Suicide Prevention Program Education and Training Coordinator, providing the organization, strategy, planning, and logistics necessary to implement annual Suicide Prevention education to staff within the Indianapolis VAMC, CBOCs, and satellite offices (in-reach). The SPC is responsible to ensure that all received outreach materials (e.g., Veterans Crisis Line brochures, magnets, wrist bands, key chains, wallet cards, coasters, bags, folders, etc.) are properly sorted, organized, stored, inventoried, and distributed both within the Indianapolis VAMC, CBOCs, and to stakeholders in the community who voluntarily promote the materials in their communities.
Lead the planning and implementation of the annual Suicide Prevention Month (September) activities for the Indianapolis VAMC, to include assisting the Social Work Supervisor/SPC with the management of any available, designated Suicide Prevention funds applied toward these efforts.
Assisting the Social Work Supervisor/SPC with the development and revision of Suicide Prevention policy, protocol, and standard operating procedures for the Suicide Prevention Program.
Represent the Psychiatry and Mental Health Service on behalf of Suicide Prevention for internal, or external workgroups, meetings or events as assigned; including support of community outreach events and education - including representation and public speaking on behalf of the VA's Suicide Prevention efforts, as an expert in this area.
The presence of the SPC will ensure proper oversight of essential daily administrative functions of the Suicide Prevention Program, when working independently in the absence of any other Suicide Prevention Team members.
Provide primary clinical social work supervision (to include clinical documentation co- signature) of any pre-licensed Social Worker within the Suicide Prevention Program, if arranged.
Case Management:
Initiate contact with Veteran to discuss program involvement and expectations
Assist with the completion and utilization of a Suicide Prevention Safety Plan, and reinforce, review, and revise with the Veteran, as needed
Track treatment progress via contact with Veteran, MHTC, and treatment teams, and ensure HRF-7 compliance with all metric targets.
Assess suicide risk by identifying risk/protective factors and warning signs
Provide appropriate social work intervention and referral as clinically indicated
Ensure mental health treatment planning is updated to reflect suicide risk
Track follow through with mental health services after inpatient discharge
Ensure Veteran safety by providing outreach after missed appointments
Consult treatment team regarding "high risk" flag removal or continuation
Send letters to Veteran per the Suicide Prevention mail initiative
Supportive counseling in-person or via phone

Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Education: Have a master's degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Graduates of schools of social work that are in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the School of Social Work is fully accredited.
Licensure: Persons hired or reassigned to social worker positions in the GS-0185 series in VHA must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the master's degree level.
Grade Determinations: One year of experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level. Experience must demonstrate possession of advanced practice skills and judgment, demonstrating progressively more professional competency. In Addition to candidate must demonstrate all of the following KSAs:
Knowledge of program coordination and administration which includes consultation, negotiation, and monitoring.
Knowledge and ability to write policies, procedures, and/or practice guidelines for the program.
Ability to supervise multidisciplinary staff assigned to the program.
Skill in organizing work, setting priorities, meeting multiple deadlines, and evaluating assigned program area(s).
Ability to provide training, orientation, and guidance within clinical practice.

Physical Requirements: The physical demands of the position involve standard office requirements such as using the telephone, retrieving files, writing reports, data entry and maintenance of computer databases, etc. Work is typically performed sitting at a desk and using a computer. This position may require occasional travel and driving a government vehicle. The position requires periods of walking, standing, sitting, and bending.
