This position is located at the Armed Forces Retirement Home- Washington (AFRH-W), in the Resident Services Directorate, Recreation Services Division. The mission of AFRH is to fulfill our nation's commitment to its veterans by providing a premier retirement community with exceptional residential care and extensive support services.
Duties
As a Recreation Assistant, you will:
Assist with special events, hobbies, and recreation activities to meet the needs and interests of a geriatric populations (to include independent living, assisted living, memory support, and long term care).
Set up and maintains equipment in recreation facilities. Ensures that the fitness equipment is set up, clean and in safe working condition prior to activities.
Drive automobiles, golf carts, pick-up trucks and a 15- passenger van to transport Residents on trips.
Assist with, loading and unloading Residents, wheelchairs and materials and assures that the vehicle is not loaded beyond the rated capacity.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Supervisory Recreation Specialist, Lead Recreation Specialist and or Chief Resident Services.
Qualifications
You must meet the following requirements by the closing date of this announcement.
Specialized Experience for the GS-05: You must have one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position includes:
- Serving as a Recreation Assistant, group leader, recreation counselor, or similar work in public and private Recreation or Recreation Therapy programs for community centers, retirement homes, senior recreation centers or resort recreation programs; OR
- Assisting in the organization and administration of recreation activities, such as leading fitness classes, gym equipment trainer, conducting tournaments, and keeping score for games; OR
- Ordering and maintaining recreation supplies; OR
- Setting up equipment for games, tournaments, and other organized group recreational activities.
OR
You may substitute education for general or specialized experience as follows: Successful completion of a 4-yearcourse of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in courses related to recreation or physical education.
OR
You may qualify by a combination of experience and education. Options for qualifying based on a combination will be identified in the online questions. Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours of a course of study leading to a bachelor's degree is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirements. Two full academic years of study, or 60 semester hours, beyond the second year is equivalent to 1 year of specialized experience. Determine the applicant's total qualifying experience as a percentage of the year of specialized experience. Then determine the applicant's education as a percentage of the education that meets the specialized experience. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify the applicant for that grade level.
SPECIAL NOTE: Long-term care experience and/or interacting with geriatric patients is highly desired.

The education generally must be from an accredited (or pre-accredited) college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. If you are qualifying based on foreign education, you must submit proof of creditability of education as evaluated by a credentialing agency. Refer to the
