As a Recreation Assistant, at AFRH the Recreation Assistant assists the Recreation Team Leader in establishing, developing, and implementing comprehensive social activities, vocational opportunities, and outdoor programing which generates healthy lifestyles, encourages fellowship, boosts morale, and offers stimulation to a diverse senior population of approximately 500 Residents.
Duties
As a Recreation Assistant, you will:
ACTIVITIES: Assist with special events, hobbies, and recreation activities to meet the needs and interests of a geriatric populations (to include independent living, assisted living, memory support, and long term care). Activities could include fitness, tournaments, leagues, sports, games, outdoor activities, cookouts, and arts and crafts etc.(ceramics, woodworking, framing, painting and general hobbies).
EQUIPMENT SET UP: Set up and maintain equipment in recreation facilities mentioned above and others as assigned, ensuring that the equipment is clean and in safe working condition prior to activities, store same equipment following activity and straightens up activity area.
TRANSPORTATION DUTIES: Drive automobiles, golf carts, pick-up trucks and a 15- passenger van to transport Residents on trips. Move materials/supplies throughout the grounds and on public roads, for long and short periods of time as needed. Assist with, loading and unloading Residents, wheelchairs and materials. Maintain accountability for all Residents on various trips, serve as tour guide, and take roll call upon departure and the return trip.
PURCHASE OF SUPPLIES: Pick up supplies and items, which have been purchased from local businesses.
HEALTH CHECKS: As part of the Resident Services team, incumbent will be required to assist in the Health Check process to insure the Health and wellbeing of the AFRH residents.
Qualifications
You must meet the following requirements within 30 days of the closing date of this announcement.
Specialized Experience:
For the GS-05, you must have one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position includes:
- Serving as a Recreation Assistant, group leader, recreation counselor, or similar work in public and private Recreation or Recreation Therapy programs for community centers, retirement homes, senior recreation centers or resort recreation programs; OR
- Assisting in the organization and administration of recreation activities, such as leading fitness classes, gym equipment trainer, conducting tournaments, and keeping score for games; OR
- Ordering and maintaining recreation supplies; OR
- Setting up equipment for games, tournaments, and other organized group recreational activities.
OR
You may substitute education for specialized experience as follows: Successful completion of a 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in courses related to recreation or physical education.
OR
You may qualify by a combination of experience and education. Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours of a course of study leading to a bachelor's degree is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirements. Two full academic years of study, or 60 semester hours, beyond the second year is equivalent to 1 year of specialized experience. Determine the applicant's total qualifying experience as a percentage of the year of specialized experience. Then determine the applicant's education as a percentage of the education that meets the specialized experience. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify the applicant for that grade level.
In addition to the above requirements, you must meet the following time-in-grade requirement, if applicable:
For the GS-5, you must have been at the GS-4 level for 52 weeks.
Time After Competitive Appointment: Candidates who are current Federal employees serving on a non-temporary competitive appointment must have served at least three months in that appointment.

Education Requirements:
The education generally must be from an accredited (or pre-accredited) college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. If you are qualifying based on foreign education, you must submit proof of creditability of education as evaluated by a credentialing agency. Refer to the
