This position is located in the General Litigation Section, Commercial Litigation Unit, of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. The Commercial Litigation Unit is responsible for providing legal advice, and conducting nationwide litigation, on resolution and receivership issues, including real estate, bankruptcy, subsidiary, and general litigation.

Duties
Prepares legal briefs, office memoranda, and other documents on very complex or sensitive legal and litigation issues, including those involving questions of first impression and with conflicting precedent that require extensive research, analyses, and/or unusual ingenuity to resolve.
Supervises and maintains close communication with outside counsel to ensure compliance with the FDIC Outside Counsel Deskbook. Briefs before courts nationwide, both state and federal, on behalf of or against the FDIC in any capacity.
Identifies complex legal issues related to civil, bankruptcy, and related criminal litigation, and engages in or directs legal research on these issues.
Responsible for complex litigation that includes cases designated as protracted and/or involving novel and complex legal issues or involving large dollar amounts.
Responsible for identifying and managing complex commercial legal issues and matters related to commercial litigation requiring a uniform, national resolution, including those that arise from the FDIC’s role as receiver, liquidator, or conservator of failed financial institutions.
Oversees preparation of memoranda of law, motions, discovery, briefs, judgments, orders, decrees, and related legal documents incident to the pursuit or defense of commercial litigation. In the event of an adverse judgment or appeal, makes recommendation whether to appeal.
Qualifications
Specialized experience must be directly related to the position being filled and is experience gained after issuance of bar membership.
This position has a positive education requirement, transcripts must be provided showing degree conferred. Official transcripts must be provided prior to appointment.
Education: All attorney and law clerk trainee positions have a minimum education requirement of a Juris Doctorate (J.D.) or Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) or Master of Laws (LL.M.) from a school accredited by the American Bar Association (ABA).
Bar Membership: All attorney positions require current active bar membership (valid license to practice law). Admission to the bar of any state, District of Columbia, any United States territory or Commonwealth, or Federal Court is acceptable. Active Bar membership must be verified prior to appointment. Employees must maintain active bar membership while employed as an attorney with the FDIC.
Qualifying experience may be obtained in the private or public sector. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic, religious/spiritual; community; student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. To qualify, applicants must have completed at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the 14 grade level or above in the Federal service.
Specialized experience is experience as an attorney conducting, coordinating or managing commercial litigation or litigation related to failed financial institutions.
