The Recreation Assistant position will serve in the Recreational Therapy Section of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation located at the Veterans Healthcare System in Chillicothe, OH. Employee will support recreation therapists in providing recreation needs and in planning, organizing, advising on and administering recreation activities and programs.

Duties

***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION*** This position involves a multi-grade career ladder. The major duties listed below represent the full performance level of GS-6. At the lower grade levels, you will perform assignments of a more limited scope and with less independence. You will progressively acquire the background necessary to perform at the full performance level GS-6. Promotion is at the discretion of the supervisor and is contingent upon satisfactory performance, availability of higher-level work and availability of funds. "NOTE: You will be required to have and maintain a current lifeguard certification. You will have up to 6 months to obtain the lifeguard certification and will be responsible for recertification. Failure to meet these requirements may result in removal/termination." Duties will include, but may not be limited to the following: Provides coverage for daily operation of the pool and gym, responsible for lifeguarding Veterans at the facility. Provides training for proper use of equipment, and facilities in gym and pool, and ensures compliance of rules of use for the facility. Rescues swimmers and provides first aid as required. Monitors equipment condition, tracks maintenance and issues and receives equipment. Assist with a wide variety of therapeutic recreation treatment, modalities and procedures that are care planned and recommended by therapist, or by the Recreation Therapy Supervisor as part of the total plan of care of patients. Sets up gym and pool for scheduled activities, records attendance, notifies Veterans of schedule changes, tracks supplies used by patients when checking the items out, and monitors condition of supplies upon return. Provides coverage to varied indoor and outdoor groups. Works with selected diagnosis utilizing a variety of treatment modalities and procedures care planed by therapist and supervised by supervisor as part of total plan of care of patients. Follows treatment plan to carry out recommended treatment of 1:1's or group treatment. Recommends changes or modifications of treatment procedures to the therapist or supervisor to determine appropriate modifications. Facilitates varied activities, including indoor/outdoor groups, records attendance, and documents participation. Prepares areas for recreation activities and programs. Assists in preparations for community outings away from the facility, which are used to meet therapeutic goals. Assists visiting performers and volunteer group entertainers during the process of all types of recreational activities to assure the activity functions smoothly and fulfills the purpose for which it was planned. Check facilities and recreational areas to ensure they are properly arranged for scheduled activities and that needed supplies and equipment are on hand prior to the time the activity is scheduled to start. Tests equipment and tools for safe operation. Ensures that all supply and equipment requirements are identified/justified and requested through supervisor. Reports the need for repairs or needed equipment to supervisor. Performs other duties as assigned. Work Schedule: Tuesday - Saturday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Weekends, Evenings and Holidays may be required. For Recreation Assistant GS-4 grade level, applicants must possess at least one of the following qualification requirements. EXPERIENCE GS-04: Six months of general experience and six months of specialized experience. General experience is any type of work that demonstrates your ability to perform the work of the position, or experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation. Specialized experience is experience equivalent to the GS-03 grade level in Federal service that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include: group leader, counselor, or similar work in public and private recreation programs for adults or children such as summer camps, local playgrounds, YWCA and YMCA clubs, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, urban community centers, or resort recreational activities; teacher's aide in elementary school recreation or physical education program; aid or assistant assignments in recreation while on active military service; aid or assistant in the organization and administration of recreation activities, such as preparing activities calendars, maintaining attendance records, and providing information concerning schedules and activities; summer aid in a State or national park, with duties related to the recreational activities of visitors to campsites, trails, picnic areas, nature and raft centers, boating and fishing areas, etc.; aid or assistant in the issuance of authorized property, and in the maintenance/accountability of inventory control for such property in a recreation facility; or aid or assistant in a hotel or resort recreation service, with duties such as setting up areas for games, tournaments, and other organized group recreational activities. -OR- SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED): Successfully completed 2 years of post-high school study that included at least 12 semester hours in courses related to recreation (e.g., basic psychology, group dynamics, physical education, arts and crafts, etc.). -OR- COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED): Equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education (beyond the first year) and specialized experience. The education and specialized experience must be related to the position, as listed above. For Recreation Assistant GS-5 grade level, applicants must possess at least one of the following qualification requirements. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE GS-05: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 grade level in Federal service that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include: group leader, counselor, or similar work in public and private recreation programs for adults or children such as summer camps, local playgrounds, YWCA and YMCA clubs, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, urban community centers, or resort recreational activities; teacher's aide in elementary school recreation or physical education program; aid or assistant assignments in recreation while on active military service; aid or assistant in the organization and administration of recreation activities, such as preparing activities calendars, maintaining attendance records, and providing information concerning schedules and activities; summer aid in a State or national park, with duties related to the recreational activities of visitors to campsites, trails, picnic areas, nature and raft centers, boating and fishing areas, etc.; aid or assistant in the issuance of authorized property, and in the maintenance/accountability of inventory control for such property in a recreation facility; or aid or assistant in a hotel or resort recreation service, with duties such as setting up areas for games, tournaments, and other organized group recreational activities; conducting inventory of recreation supplies and equipment; and assuring availability of supplies for recreation and treatment areas and activities. -OR- SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED): Successfully completed a four-year course of study above high-school leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in courses related to recreation or physical education. -OR- COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED): Equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education (beyond the second year) and specialized experience. The education and specialized experience must be related to the position, as listed above. For Recreation Assistant GS-6 grade level, applicants must possess at least one of the following qualification requirements. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: One full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-5) in the Federal Service that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform the duties of this position. In addition to the specialized experience cited above for the lower grade levels, qualifying specialized experience for the GS-6 includes: providing training for the proper use of equipment and facilities in gym, pool and recreation areas; and performing lifeguarding duties in a pool area and providing first aid as necessary. -OR- SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED): Successfully completed a half year of graduate education (6 months/9 semester hours) with a major that included courses related to recreation or physical education. -OR- COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED): Equivalent combinations of successfully completed graduate level education (beyond a bachelor's degree) and specialized experience to meet total experience requirements. The education and specialized experience must be related to the position, as listed above. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: the work involves regular and recurring physical exertion, such as prolonged walking, standing or sitting, bending, moderately heavy lifting or moving of equipment, pushing wheelchairs, positioning severely disabled patients, transferring from bed to wheelchair and assisting patients in ambulation. The work requires specific common physical characteristics and abilities, such as above average agility and dexterity, as well as skill and ability in one or more art forms.
