The Recreation Assistant is located in the Recreational Therapy Section of REC-ICC (Rehab & Extended Care Integrated Clinical Communities) at the Chillicothe VA Medical Center. The Recreation Assistant supports recreation therapists in providing recreation needs to restore, remediate, and/or rehabilitate functional capabilities of Veterans, under therapist or supervisors direction as well as coverage for the gym and pool programing.
Duties
Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Assists in Program Implementation & Provides Treatment (40%):
Assists in implementation of program activities.
Facilitates varied activities, including indoor/outdoor groups, records attendance and documents participation.
Assists with operation of the gym, pool, bowling alley, clinic, and units.
Uses a variety of modalities as appropriate with obtained/current training such as (art, music, hobbies, social recreation, creative communication, games, adapted sports, physical fitness, yoga, tai chi, special events, etc., to achieve goals.
Works with recreation program participants in well-organized and carefully monitored recreation activities.
Conducts treatment following standard treatment plans developed by therapist or supervisor.
Plans and implements a program of meaningful activities for participants using appropriate strategies, modalities, and interventions to meet the needs and interests of participants to improve physical, social, emotional, cognitive, and spiritual well-being.
Documents progress towards the goals in the medical record of the participants.
Pool Lifeguarding/Gym Coverage (35%):
Provides coverage for daily operation of the pool and gym, responsible for lifeguarding Veterans at the facility.
Provides training for proper use of equipment, and facilities in gym and pool, and ensures compliance of rules of use for the facility.
Provides information to swimmers regarding safety rules and procedures.
Assists with a wide variety of therapeutic recreation treatment, modalities and procedures that are care planned and recommended by therapist, or by the Recreation Therapy Supervisor as part of the total plan of care of patients.
Must have and maintain current lifeguard certification.
Preparation/Maintenance (25%):
Prepares areas for recreation activities and programs.
Arranges for and maintains equipment and tools for the scheduled event or treatment.
Tests equipment and tools for safe operation. Make necessary adjustments and minor repairs.
NOTE: You will be required to have and maintain a current lifeguard certification. You will have up to 6 months to obtain the lifeguard certification and will be responsible for recertification. Failure to meet these requirements may result in removal/termination.
Promotion Potential: The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level.
Work Schedule: Tuesday through Saturday, 8:30a.m. to 5:00p.m. Weekends, Evenings and Holidays may be required.

Physical Requirements: In many assignments the work involves regular and recurring physical exertion, such as prolonged walking, standing or sitting, bending, moderately heavy lifting or moving of equipment, pushing wheelchairs, positioning severely disabled patients, transferring from bed to wheelchair and assisting patients in ambulation. The work requires specific common physical characteristics and abilities, such as above average agility and dexterity, as well as skill and ability in one or more art forms.
Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 07/24/2024.
Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-5 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-4. For a GS-6 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-5. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.
GRADE DETERMINATION:
GS-4 LEVEL:
Experience: You must have six (6) months of general experience AND six (6) months of specialized experience. You must include beginning and ending dates and hours worked per week for each period of employment or volunteer service.
General Experience is any type of work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position, or experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation. Examples of general experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Operation of pool and gym; Prepares areas for recreation activities and programs; and Facilitates varied activities, including indoor/outdoor groups, records attendance and documents participation; AND
Specialized Experience: Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Group leader, counselor, or similar work in public and private recreation programs for adults or children such as summer camps, local playgrounds, YWCA and YMCA clubs, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, urban community centers, or resort recreational activities; Teacher's aid in elementary school recreation or physical education program, with emphasis on development of general recreational skills and abilities; Aid or assistant assignments in recreation while on active military service; Aid or assistant in the organization and administration of recreation activities, such as preparing activities calendars, maintaining attendance records, and providing information concerning schedules and activities; Summer aid in a State or national park, with duties related to the recreational activities of visitors to campsites, trails, picnic areas, nature and raft centers, and boating and fishing areas (e.g., demonstrating camping techniques and park safety, conducting nature tours, and overseeing farm animal areas provided for children); Sales or stock clerk in a recreation supplies and equipment shop; Aid or assistant in the issuance of authorized property, and in the maintenance of inventory control and accountability for such property in a recreation facility; Aid or assistant in a hotel or resort recreation service, with duties such as setting up areas for games, tournaments, and other organized group recreational activities. OR,
Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have successfully completed 2 years of study that included at least 12 semester hours in courses related to recreation (e.g., basic psychology, group dynamics, physical education, arts and crafts, etc.). OR,
Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have an combination of specialized experience and education beyond high school.
GS-5 LEVEL:
Specialized Experience: You must possess one year (52 weeks) of specialized experience at the GS-4 level. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Group leader, counselor, or similar work in public and private recreation programs for adults or children such as summer camps, local playgrounds, YWCA and YMCA clubs, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, urban community centers, or resort recreational activities; Teacher's aid in elementary school recreation or physical education program, with emphasis on development of general recreational skills and abilities; Aid or assistant assignments in recreation while on active military service; Aid or assistant in the organization and administration of recreation activities, such as preparing activities calendars, maintaining attendance records, and providing information concerning schedules and activities; Summer aid in a State or national park, with duties related to the recreational activities of visitors to campsites, trails, picnic areas, nature and raft centers, and boating and fishing areas (e.g., demonstrating camping techniques and park safety, conducting nature tours, and overseeing farm animal areas provided for children); Sales or stock clerk in a recreation supplies and equipment shop; Aid or assistant in the issuance of authorized property, and in the maintenance of inventory control and accountability for such property in a recreation facility; Aid or assistant in a hotel or resort recreation service, with duties such as setting up areas for games, tournaments, and other organized group recreational activities. Specialized Experience: You must possess one year (52 weeks) of specialized experience at the GS-5 level.
