About the Position: The Master, Derrickboat is assigned to the Light Capacity Fleet Unit of the Regional Rivers Repair Fleet, duty station located in Old Hickory, TN. As a Master Derrickboat Operator of heavy lift diesel powered floating cranes with lift capacities up to 250 tons, has overall responsibility of the operation and maintenance of the equipment assigned.

Duties

Major maintenance and repair of locks and dams, channel maintenance activities, marine construction, and general hoisting services. Direct or perform the operation of hoisting and swinging engines on derrick boats and floating cranes with capacities up to 250 tons engaged in marine construction and repair services and maintenance of navigation channels Responsible for the proper list, trim, and stability of the vessel for the work being done. Move levers controlling the raising and lowering of the boom and the horizontal movement of the boom, or the horizontal movement of the cab and boom, the height of the hoisting line, and the opening and closing of the bucket attachments. Make heavy lifts to and from docks, navigation structures, other vessels, and from underwater areas. Place objects on barges for repair or transportation. Perform preventive maintenance and in making emergency repairs to equipment. Oversee and assist with all repairs to house, hull, machinery and equipment, including major repair work on cables, sheaves, buckets, spuds, and other vessel or crane equipment. Plan and coordinate for critical lifts. Prepare critical lift plans or reviews and approves lift plans prepared by other operators. Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.

  • Crane operators license is required
  • Must possess a valid state driver's license.
  • One year supervisory probationary period may be required

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Master Derrickboat without more than normal supervision. Know how to operate land-based cranes or floating cranes in the maintenance of structures and have performed general lifting and duty cycle work. Have worked under the general direction of a crane or derrick boat master. Have been responsible for the inspection of cranes that you have operated. Experience assisting with the preparation of critical lift plans, activity hazard analysis and completion of requisitions and periodic reports. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Ability to Drive Safely (Motor Vehicles) and Ability to Operate Safely (Non-Motor Vehicle)Ability To Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. (related to mobile equipment operation)Operation of Motor VehiclesWork Practices (includes keeping things neat, clean, and in order) PHYSICAL EFFORT: Moderate physical effort is normally required in steering the vessel, walking, and climbing. Somewhat greater effort is required in accomplishing housekeeping and general maintenance work. Close hand and eye coordination is required when operating controls to maneuver vessel in traffic, in confined areas, and during derrick operations. WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed both inside and outside aboard floating plant in all types of weather. There is danger of drowning due to accident or storm (and particularly due to improper lifting or handling of heavy objects which may cause the derrick to overturn). There is further danger of injury due to blasting operations. Is subject to cuts, bruises, sprains, and broken bones. The possibility of falling or slipping on wet or icy decks and ladders is always present. Exposed to unpleasant noise, heat, and fumes produced by the engine and to dirt and grease when making minor repairs to vessel and machinery.
