This position is part of the Bureau of Indian Education at Haskell Indian Nations University. As a Support Services Specialist (Financial Aid), you will be responsible for assisting students and families with financial aid options and processing federal, state, and institutional financial aid applications in accordance with federal, state, and college regulations.
Duties
As a Support Services Specialist (Financial Aid) GS-0301-7/9, your typical work assignments may include the following:
Advise and assist students with financial aid applications and other issues and concerns as they arise.
Verify accuracy of documents and consistency of data; financial aid transcripts verification document and student information; perform data analysis to identify discrepancies in data; and determine actions for resolution.
Collect and process required documentation to verify student's financial aid applications in accordance with federal regulations.
Conduct financial aid informational presentations to special groups, such as high schools, and new & current students.
Draft correspondence and respond to parent and student inquiries related to financial aid.
Attend training, workshops, and conferences to learn and stay current on policies and regulations.
Computer data entry using job-related software programs.

Qualifications
Applicants must meet the qualification requirements contained in the OPM Standards. For this position, they are listed below.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization.
GS-7: 1-year of specialized experience to at least the GS-5 level in the Federal service. Examples include: assist the Financial Aid Officer with providing assistance to students, alumni applicants, staff, and faculty regarding financial aid data; assist with determining students financial need and eligibility for federal, state, district and other financial aid programs; assist with researching and verifying data in manual and computerized records systems; assist students with financial aid and scholarship applications. -OR-
EDUCATION: Superior Academic Achievement which included one of the following: 1) Class standing-applicants must be in the upper third of the graduating class, based on completed courses; or (2) Grade-Point Average-applicants must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or (3) Election to membership in a National Scholastic Honor Society -membership in a freshman honor society cannot be used to meet the requirements of this provision. To be creditable under this provision, superior academic achievement must have been gained in a curriculum that is qualifying for the position to be filled. Successfully completed one full year of appropriate graduate level education (18 semester hours, 27 quarter hours or equivalent) in a field of study directly related to the work of this position. NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts. -OR-
COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Successfully completed post-high school education and specialized experience that together meet the qualification requirements for the position. NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts and your resume must support the specialized experience.
GS-9: 1-year of specialized experience to at least the GS-7 level in the Federal service. Examples include: provide assistance to students, alumni applicants, staff, and faculty regarding financial aid data; determine students financial need and eligibility for federal, state, district and other financial aid programs; research and verify data in manual and computerized records systems; advise and assist students with financial aid and scholarship applications; interpret federal policies and/or regulations related to Federal Student Aid and assist in the improvement of policies and procedures. -OR-
EDUCATION: Have a master's or equivalent graduate degree; OR 2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree; OR LL.B. or J.D., if related to this position. NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts. -OR-
COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Combination of specialized experience as described in A and more than one year of graduate education as described in B when combined together meets 100% of the total requirements for the position. To compute, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of graduate education beyond one year by 18. Add the two percentages together. The total percentage must equal at least 100% to qualify. NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts and your resume must support the specialized experience.

Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year (52 weeks) of service at the next lower grade level.
