Duties

Industrial Hygiene Program Management. Plans, organizes and performs health risk assessment related activities (Bioenvironmental Engineering/Public Health), ensuring that (Bioenvironmental Engineering/Public Health) complies with legal and regulatory requirements and meets customer's needs. Occupational Health Program. Establishes and directs an occupational health program for physical screening of employees exposed to particular toxic/biological materials or physical hazards. Establishes procedures to identify personnel requiring any pre-placement, periodic and termination medical examinations. Emergency Management. Serves as a member of the EOC as determined by Wing needs. Maintains all 886H response equipment and participates in the AF Proficiency Analytical Testing (PAT) program and ensures that all Bioenvironmental Engineering employees and Traditional Reservists (TR's) are also trained and proficient. Provides support to the Wing Radiation Safety Officer. Keeps informed on the latest DOD, USAF, OSHA, ACGIH, ANSI, NEC, NFP A, NRC, and EPA regulations or standards and advances in industrial hygiene and public health by reading professional literature, attending training and classes.

  • Work may occasionally require travel away from the normal duty station on military or commercial aircraft. Employee is required to obtain HazMat Operations certification
  • Employee may be required to work uncommon tour of duty to support reserve requirements and/or emergency response
  • Employee must meet physical standards according to AFI 48-123 and NFPA I 582, Standard on Comprehensive Occupational Medical Program/or Fire Departments
  • Employee is required to wear respiratory protection and meet the physical requirements to wear an SCBA and level A Hazard Materials Response suit. No record of acrophobia or claustrophobia
  • Must possess a valid state driver's license to operate government motor vehicles in accordance with Air Force Instruction 24-301, Vehicle Operations
  • Normal color vision and depth perception as defined in Air Force Instruction 48-123, Medical Examinations and Standards
  • Maintain local network access IAW AFMANs 33-152, User Responsibilities and Guidance for Information Systems and 33-282, Computer Security
  • Ability to wear a 40-pound air pack while carrying 40 pounds of equipment in a totally encapsulating chemical protective suit. Medically qualified in accordance with Air Force Instruction 48-137, Respiratory Protection Program
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret Clearance
  • Incumbent must be medically fit for duty (FFD) as determined by a credentialed military healthcare provider upon completing an initial pre-placement FFD/medical surveillance (i.e. occupational health) exam and subsequent (con't)
  • (con't) periodic FFD/medical surveillance exams. Specific exam requirements and frequency of examination will be determined by the installation Occupational and Environmental Health Working Group and communicated (con't)
  • (con't) to AFRC Civilian Personnel Offices per AFI 10- 2501, Air Force Emergency Management Program and AFI 48-145, Occupational and Environmental Health Program

BASIC REQUIREMENT OR INDIVIDUAL OCCUPATIONAL REQUIREMENT: The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education(external link) at the time the degree was obtained. Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: A bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science; or A bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene: or Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (external link) (ABIH). Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicant must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the GS-09 (or higher) grade level or equivalent in other pay systems. Examples of specialized experience includes: Providing professional knowledge of Industrial Hygiene and related safety and environmental concepts, principles and practices relating to a wide range of duties concerned with recognizing, identifying, evaluating, and controlling occupational health and environmental hazards in a variety of settings. Applying knowledge of related scientific disciplines, e. g., toxicology, physiology, and biochemistry. Using knowledge of operational risk management principles and how to conduct risk-based assessments. Conducting industrial hygiene inspections to ensure compliance with applicable governing laws, regulations and State and Local directives. Researching, analyzing, interpreting, and applying rules, regulations, and procedures. Applying knowledge of a wide range of industrial hygiene sampling techniques and skill in the use, calibration, and maintenance of industrial hygiene equipment. Using computers and software programs to create letters, reports, briefings, spreadsheets, databases, and graphs to communicate technical information effectively, orally and in writing. OR EDUCATION: Successfully completed 3 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work of the of an Industrial Hygienist. OR COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. FEDERAL TIME-IN-GRADE (TIG) REQUIREMENT FOR GENERAL SCHEDULE (GS) POSITIONS: Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in-grade requirements to be considered eligible. One year at the GS-09 level is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-11 level. TIG applies if you are in a current GS position or held a GS position within the previous 52 weeks. NOTE: Applicants applying as VEOA candidates who are current GS civil service employees or are prior GS civil service employees within the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: 1. Professional knowledge of industrial hygiene concepts, principles, practices and techniques. 2. Knowledge of applicable DoD, USAF, OSHA, EPA, State and Local directives; knowledge of Air Force and OSHA safety and security regulations, practices and procedures. 3. Skill in the use, calibration, and maintenance of industrial hygiene equipment. 4. Ability to identify, evaluate and control occupational health hazards found in a variety of industrial settings. 5. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing to include technical information. 6. Ability to identify problems and develop innovative solutions; schedule and prioritize numerous projects to meet deadlines. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
