The Lead Medical Technician serves as a phlebotomist in the clinical laboratory, bone marrow assistant for the clinician and specimen receiving and processing technician. The other role of the Lead Medical Technician is to oversee the training of other medical technicians in bone marrow assistant procedures performed for the Hematology laboratory. The incumbent is responsible for assisting during bone marrow procedures and performing ancillary diagnostic testing on automated machinery.
Duties
The specific duties of the Lead Medical Technician include but are not limited to the following:
Phlebotomy, Specimen Receiving and Processing: 50%
Perform venipuncture procedures and blood culture collection utilizing sterile field techniques during ward rounds at specified times. Venipuncture procedures performed on the wards involve drawing blood from a patient in various states, such as the comatose, disabled, sedated, patients in traction, who may have possible other complicating conditions. Difficult draws and use of specialized collection techniques are a common occurrence.
Perform venipuncture procedures in blood drawing station. Patients drawn in the blood drawing station may be a less difficult draw, but may involve patients that are irritable, scared and in various states of mind due to age, medication or drugs.
Maintain supplies for blood culture collection, on blood drawing trays and in blood drawing area, and on bone marrow carts. This includes the pickup of new sterile material from SPD and the return of used material to SPD for proper sterilization and repackaging.
Maintain a clean and organized work area
Responsible for ensuring precise identification of patients by following designated three tier identification protocol.
Responsible for patient care activities for adult and geriatric patients. He/she is responsible for understanding the aging process and to accommodate these changes.
Builds a professional rapport with patients so that service of can be provided in a friendly and compassionate manner.
Utilizes the VISTA/CPRS computer system to build blood drawing collection list and enters patient data into the VISTA computer system.
Team Leader Duties (50%):

Chemistry automation sample loading for standardize testing
Maintains quality control data on machinery
Performs CLIA Waived Testing as assigned by the pathologist and supervisor. Testing include and not limited to histopathology sample cutting, cytology slides preparation, urinalysis macroscopic testing, microbiology samples set up, serology testing, fecal occult blood testing, urine pregnancy testing and others.

Overseeing the training of new employee process.
Overseeing the bone marrow biopsy training for new employee and assist during a bone marrow biopsy procedure.
Responsible for assisting, coaching and mentoring the accessioning / processing / phlebotomy personnel and reports to the supervisor of the laboratory.
Facilitates the efficient delivery of laboratory specimens, services and information by coaching, solving work problems and organizing the section to accomplish their work. The incumbent answers technical phlebotomy questions, forwards inquiries to the appropriate department and manages supplies and inventory.
Maintains laboratory Records:
Maintains and controls laboratory records. Incumbent is responsible for presenting the data to the supervisor in a logical and systematic fashion. As such, the technician is responsible for some data analysis including arithmetic calculations, algebra, graphing of data using interactive computer programs and preliminary statistical evaluations.
Develops and maintains detailed records of protocols and are neatly kept and catalogued in appropriate format. Data are often graphed or displayed in tables to highlight results.
Maintains records information pertaining to data such as patient wait times and patient call-backs
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday from 7:00 AM-4:00PM and is closed holidays and weekends

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 08/02/2024.
Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-06 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-05. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. NOTE: You must submit a copy of your most recent personnel action/SF50. Additionally, An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-05 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled.

Physical Requirements: The work requires lifting of greater than 20 lbs., pushing of greater than 100 lbs., long periods of standing, repeated bending and walking long distances.
