This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for certain personnel in the DoD workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.
About the Position: Installation, maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of a variety of air conditioning, heating and ventilation equipment.
Duties
Perform the full range of installation, maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of a variety of air conditioning, heating and ventilation equipment.
Work from oral instructions, blueprints and work orders.
Incumbent will trace and locate defects, determine the type and extent of repair needed, and plan the work.
Incumbent will select the proper tools and testing devices and accomplish the work in accordance with accepted trade practices.
Drives various vehicles (e.g., utility truck or similar vehicles (primarily under 10,000 gross vehicle weight) to and from the work site in order to transport self, supplies, and other employees throughout the installation and on public roads.
Requirements
- Appointment to this position is subject to a background investigation to determine your suitability for Federal employment.
- This position required the incumbent must possess and maintain Universal (Types I, II, and III) Certification as required by 40 CFR Part 82, Subpart F.
- The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
- This position has been designated "Mission Essential". In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situation the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter.
- Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.

Ability to do the work of a(n) Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic ~ without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform common duties as appropriate. I can perform the full repair cycle of air conditioning and heating equipment. I am able to maintain residential air conditioning equipment using tools common to the trade such as meters, gauges, recovery machines, and hand tools; perform refrigerant recovery; install and maintain oil and gas burners, furnaces, and heat pumps; and perform preventative maintenance tasks such as cleaning coils, drain pans and drains, and adjusting belts. I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
PHYSICAL EFFORT
Employee is required to handle and carry tools, equipment, and testing devices that seldom weigh over 23 kilograms (50 pounds). Work is normally performed at sites where most of the equipment can be reached from the floor or from ladders. Occasionally will be required to perform work from a platform or scaffold in order to reach parts of the systems such as fans, electrical and waterlines, and duct work. Occasionally required to stoop, stretch, bend, kneel and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Much of this work is performed outside with exposure to temperature extremes common to this area. Some work performed indoors and in mechanical rooms. Occasionally subject to cuts, burns, electrical shocks and respiratory ailments. Exposed to repeated, prolonged or concentrated amounts of refrigerant gases which may cause toxic effects to eyes, skin and internal organs.Employee may be required to wear safety equipment such as, but not limited to, hearing protection, safety glasses, hard hat,respirators, gloves and safety shoes.

Education
