The primary function of these positions are to serve as Laundry Worker for the Laundry Section, Facility Management Service at the VA Caribbean Healthcare System (VACHS), San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Duties
Major Duties:
Collects from all the assigned areas the soiled textiles as required by the established schedule.
Transports the soiled and clean textiles inside the proper and assigned carts.
Manipulates large quantities of linens via monorail system.
Maintains a daily record of all pieces and poundage of textiles being processed.
Separates torn or stained items and report them to the supervisor.
Distributes clean linen to clean rooms on wards in compliance with linen quotas and delivery schedules.
Rotates on the sanitation of the laundry area, (i.e.) soiled linen room cleaning, and disinfecting areas using all safety procedures to prevent contamination of oneself or others.
Stamps mark all unmarked laundry items and/or employee uniforms with proper VA logo cleaning the marking machine as required.
Sorts soiled different categories of linen items according to classification procedures to ensure proper washing and handling techniques are followed.
Prepares and waxes the flat-work ironer at the beginning of each day.
Feeds damp pieces of linen into flat-work ironer using an automatic 4-lane spreading-feeding device, or by handfeeding directly into the ironer.
Operates an electric tag truck to move linen carts from the laundry area to the elevators following all safety rules and measures of the equipment when operating electric tag truck.
Performs other duties assigned as it relates to the position.
Work Schedule: 6:00am-2:30pm May rotate on weekends and work on Holidays

Qualifications
This position includes a Selective Placement Factor (skill, knowledge, ability or other worker characteristic basic to and essential for satisfactory performance of the job). PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: Incumbent must use the proper body motion and coordination and possess the strength and stamina for doing heavy physical tasks for long periods of time. Must be able to handle loaded carts in excess of 700 lbs. and to lift loads over 50 lbs. Uses the provided safety garments during the performance of all the assigned duties. Assists in other areas of the plant during idle time or breakdowns of the assigned equipment and takes proper action to correct the problem.
Incumbent is exposed to noise, vibration, and hot and humid atmospheric conditions associated with a textile care setting. Requires walking continuously on concrete floors, stooping, bending, pushing, pulling, and lifting.
