Duties
As a Health Communication Specialist, you will:
Develop and implement communication and marketing strategies, programs, projects, and products for the general public and other priority audiences
In the implementation of communications strategies, programs, projects, and products, work with senior health communication specialists to ensure health communication activities are based on theory and use accepted principles, methods, and practices.
Apply communication theories and models to communication campaign development; use audience segmentation analysis and formative research to select appropriate communication channels and messages; maintain ongoing tactical communication campaign and partnership activities.
Develop feature stories, blogs and social media content in support of communication objectives
Develop and disseminate routine internal and external communications (e.g. newsletters, executive communications, fact sheets, briefing documents, intranet and external website content)
Translate scientific information into easy-to-understand language for non-scientific audiences
Provide consultation, technical assistance, and support training on communication implementation to internal and external groups. Training activities may include direct training, but also participation in the creation of training curricula and tools.
Develop, test, and disseminate science- and audience-based products, tools, and messages to different audiences in a variety of formats. Collect data from programs for the development of health communication strategies and products. Develop and present printed, electronic, and audiovisual materials for technical and lay audiences, news media outlets, web platforms and other mass-media and digital outlets. Prepare presentation materials (e.g. talking points, Power Point slides) for meetings, site visits, etc. Review and edit materials developed by staff to ensure program objectives are being met. Ensure that documents conform to the agency's policies, branding, and style. Recommend channels and media formats. Coordinate production of materials and dissemination through various media outlets.
Conduct audience research, collect feedback from consumers, monitor communication channel use, monitor audience demand for materials and publications, conduct environmental scans and other evaluation tactics to analyze the effectiveness of health communication strategies and messages.

Minimum Qualifications:
To qualify at the GS-12 grade level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level, which must include the following experience: in strategic communications and public health communications planning and execution, including message and materials development, experience translating scientific information into easy-to-understand language for non-scientific audiences and evaluating a communications program.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
