Duties
As a Health Scientist you will:
Designs, oversees, implements, and conducts major scientific surveys/studies, research, or projects to identify and solve public health problems. Collects, analyzes, and interprets data using appropriate quantitative or qualitative methods. Identifies and analyzes public health issues and their impact on operations that are critical to the public health community at large. Develops and or uses innovative methodologies and techniques. Recommends changes in programs, policies, and/or resource allocations as a result of these efforts.
Searches, synthesizes, and interprets information relevant to public health. Reviews and analyzes studies and projects assessing major and or sensitive public health issues in order to make recommendations for processes, procedures and /or policies related to public health programs, practices and research.
Collaborates with internal staff and governmental and non-governmental partners. Accomplishes work independently and/or on teams.
Assures implementation and maintenance of quality management system/essentials program and plan; and, adherence to applicable guidelines and regulations. Recommends program modification or revision to continually improve processes and procedures.
Conducts periodic quality audits to include assessment of data, documenting regulatory compliance and identifying/reporting deficiencies. Advises management regarding nonconformities; recommends appropriate investigative, remedial, and corrective action. Makes recommendations based on analyses of events or trends related to quality management and compliance.
Provides technical advice and assistance to national, state and local health agencies and to various other organizations. Leads collaboration on programs/projects/studies and coordinates efforts, as appropriate, with other program staff, other CDC Centers, Institutes and Offices, other federal agencies, national, State and local health agencies, and private and non-profit organizations, etc.
Synthesizes results into written documents and/or oral presentations. Communicates information to various audiences. Prepares scientific and other articles and technical reports for publication. Makes presentations at international and national meetings.

Basic Qualifications:
Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree: major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education(external link) at the time the degree was obtained.
Minimum Qualifications:
To qualify at the GS-13 grade level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-12 grade level, which must include the following experience: providing scientific leadership in formulating, developing, implementing and evaluating public health programs and scientific studies/surveys designed to improve public health programs.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Education
Copy of your transcripts or equivalent documentation is required for positions with an education requirement, or if you are qualifying based on education or a combination of education and experience. An official transcript will be required if you are selected.
