You will serve as a SAFETY AND OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH SPECIALIST in the Occupational and Safety Health and Environmental (OSHE) Branch (Code 1460.1) Technical Support Division (Code 1460), Naval Foundry and Propeller Center (NFPC) (Code 1400) of NORFOLK NAVAL SHIPYARD.

Duties

You will serve as the primary safety advisor and interface coordinator for NFPC. You will perform services for the Occupational Medical Surveillance Health Program for all NFPC personnel. You will compile and survey hazardous processes in determining the exposure levels to personnel during specific working operations You will identify hazardous processes, materials and protective equipment which are required. You will serve as the facilities point of contact for the radiation safety officer, and maybe required to receive special training in this capacity You will be responsible for ensuring that radiation sources and ionizing radiation are under complete and total control, and that personnel have a strict awareness when radioactive sources are present. You will train all existing and new NFPC personnel, visitors and contractors with “radiological control awareness training" on a regular basis and as required. You will assist the Fire Department, ensuring all NFPC Fire and Safety equipment within the facility are in compliance with current fire code regulations and that all fire Inspection discrepancies are acted upon and abated in a timely manner. You will interface with production personnel to identify and correct unsafe conditions, actions, and processes.

  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.

Qualifications

Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Identify unsafe conditions and work practices in an industrial environment and provide guidance on corrective actions in accordance with applicable requirements. Maintaining and preserving all documentation associated with safety and health programs. Attends planning meetings and reviews project documents to verify compliance with applicable requirements and ensure OSHE considerations are incorporated, provides guidance for new processes and equipment. Conducts mishap / accident investigations to determine contributing factors and presents findings to facility leadership. Manages and administers safety program elements of the Navy Safety Manual OPNAV M-5100.23 Experience in foundry and machine shop processes and equipment. Education

In lieu of specialized experience, you may qualify with the following education or combination of both education and experience:

Successful completion of a master's or equivalent graduate degree.

OR

Successful completion of two full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree.

OR

OR

A combination of experience and graduate education as described above that equates to one year of experience.
