Duties
Plans and executes the Fire Prevention and Fire Safety Program.
Works independently in carrying out fire prevention and fire protection inspection duties.
Conducts training of firefighting personnel, which consists of lectures, demonstrations, and verbal or written instructions in the proper use of fire-fighting equipment.
Conducts training which consists of lectures, demonstrations, and verbal or written instructions in fire prevention and evacuation procedures to be followed during fire or other emergencies hazardous to personnel and property.
Plans, schedules and directs the inspection of buildings, grounds and fixed fire protection equipment.
Initiates action to correct deficiencies and/or recommend changes or additions to ensure compliance with fire prevention and protection requirements.
Develops lesson plans for training fire fighters for locally unique hazards and operations.
Serves as a fully trained member of a firefighting crew engaged in the protection of life and property.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
- This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
- This position is Mission Essential. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
- The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
- This position is subject to the provisions of the Lautenberg Amendment. This act bans individuals convicted of misdemeanor domestic violence and certain others from possession or access to firearms or ammunition.
- This is a Term position scheduled to last 1 Year 1 Day. A term position may be extended to a maximum of six years depending upon the needs of management.
- Due to the nature of this position, employees are required to work both planned and unscheduled overtime.
- This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations. Employee shifts are rotated on a regularly scheduled basis.
- This position requires a pre-employment physical fitness assessment and continued participation in a scheduled physical fitness program as directed by Army regulatory guidance.
- This position requires you to work both inside and outside with possibility exposure to inclement weather.
- This position requires you to wear the prescribed uniform and personal protective equipment while on duty in compliance with safety and health directives (OSHA).
- This position requires you to conform to the requirements set-forth in the National Fire Protection Association 1500, Fire Department Occupational Health and Safety Program.
- This position requires you to possess and maintain DOD Hazardous Materials Technician certification, a State or National Registry Emergency Medical Technician - Basic (EMT-B) License and Public Fire and Life Safety Educator.
- This position requires you to possess and maintain DoD, IFSAC, or PRO Board Firefighter I and II Certifications, Fire Inspector I and II, HAZMAT Awareness, Fire Instructor 1.

About the Position: The Joint Munitions Command provides the Joint Force with ready, reliable, lethal munitions at the speed of war. JMC's mission is to support the production, storage, distribution and demilitarization of munitions. This position services as a Fire Protection Inspector (BLS/HAZMAT TECH), GS-0081-08, located at the McAlester Army Ammunition Plant, which is a subordinate installation of JMC.

Term Appointment NTE - Position may be filled as a Term Appointment NTE 6-8 years. Term appointments may be extended beyond of six (6) years, up to eight (8) years. With DoD approval, Term appointments may be extended beyond eight (8) years.
Current permanent Federal employees (to include permanent Army employees) applying for a Term appointment will be appointed/converted into a Term appointment with no statutory return rights back to a permanent position.
In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes:
Controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; rescue operations;
detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards;
operation of fire communications equipment; controlling hazardous materials incidents;
and/or developing, implementing, or providing training in fire protection and prevention.
This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07). Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this position, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone -- no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
Maximum Entry Age (MEA)The MEA for Firefighters is 37. Applicants not appointed by the last day of the month in which that individual reaches their 37th birthday shall not be appointed or assigned to these positions.
Maximum Re-entry Age:
An employee who previously served on a covered position may be rehired past the MEA as long as he/she is able to complete 20 years of covered service by his/her mandatory retirement age. The maximum re-entry age for the individual is calculated by determining the total amount of time he/she has served on a covered position and subtracting that from age 57, if a firefighter. The employee's current age is compared to the calculated maximum re-entry age to determine if he/she can be rehired into the covered position.
Waivers to Maximum Entry Age:
MEA may be waived, but only under specific circumstances and only if approved by the authorized entity: Waivers to MEA for firefighters must be approved by local Command.
