You will serve as an Engineering Technician in the Fabrication and Development Branch, you will be responsible for the development and fabrication of prototypes using complex precision machinery and equipment to obtain desired performance characteristics; devising experimental techniques; and performing experimental integration and testing of advanced mechanical and fluid prototype systems, including modules and subsystems, for aerospace flight hardware and ground support equipment.

Duties

Duties described below are at the highest grade advertised. Duties assigned at lower grade levels will be of more limited scope, performed with less independence and limited complexity; duties will be commensurate with the grade of selected employee. Develops and fabricates prototypes using complex precision machinery and equipment to obtain desired performance characteristics. Devises experimental techniques; and performing experimental integration and testing of advanced mechanical and fluid prototype systems, including modules and subsystems, for aerospace flight hardware and ground support equipment. Uses advanced Computer Aided Design (CAD) techniques to prepare models and specifications for fabrication, modification, test, or repair of new or existing equipment, components, related systems, fixtures and special equipment. Evaluates mechanical designs and serves as an adviser to engineers and project managers, giving expert advice relative to design for manufacturability. Develops and implements practical processes for the fabrication and use of aircraft, new technology, or equipment for NASA projects. Troubleshoots, adjusts, modifies, and improves test systems to provide support that minimizes interruptions in the ability to carry out critical testing and evaluation functions within the organization. Qualifications

Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work. To qualify for GS-09,you must have: a) One year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-08 level in the Federal service that includes: Operating conventional machining equipment, such as mills or lathes, in a manufacturing environment under normal supervision; Assisting in the inspection of part dimensions using standard machine shop measuring equipment, such as calipers, micrometers, or dial indicators, to ensure parts are within drawing tolerances; Utilizing common mechanical skills, such as torquing fasteners, installing rivets or applying adhesives to create an assembly of parts per manufacturing drawings.. OR b) Completed all requirements for a master's degree or equivalent graduate degree in engineering, engineering technology, industrial technology, construction, physics, drafting, surveying, physical science, or mathematics. OR c) Completed at least 2 full academic years of graduate education in engineering, engineering technology, industrial technology, construction, physics, drafting, surveying, physical science, or mathematics. OR d) An equivalent combination of experience and graduate education. To qualify for GS-11, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-10 level in the Federal service: Operating conventional and CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machining equipment in a manufacturing environment under normal supervision; Inspecting part dimensions using precision measuring equipment, such as micrometers, gage blocks and pins, thread gauges, height gauges, internal bore micrometer, during the manufacturing process to ensure parts are within drawing tolerances; Evaluating mechanical assemblies in CAD models or drawings to determine appropriate manufacturing or fabrication processes. To qualify for GS-12, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level in the Federal service: Utilizing Computer-aided Design/Computer-aided Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) software to program tool paths and operate Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines, such as mills or lathes, in a manufacturing environment with minimal supervision; Utilizing one or more electronic precision measuring equipment such as laser scanners, optical comparators, coordinate measuring machines, during the manufacturing process to ensure parts meet drawing Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T); Collaborating with engineers or scientists to evaluate complex mechanical assemblies in CAD models or drawings to determine appropriate manufacturing or fabrication processes and equipment (mills, lathes, routers, wire Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM), laser, or waterjet).
