Duties
As a Health Scientist (Bioinformatics) you will:
Provide scientific advice, consultation, and leadership in designing, coordinating, and maintaining public health bioinformatics project goals, objectives, and priorities
Collaborate and provide scientific advice to a variety of nation-wide and international organizations to synthesize and implement bioinformatics policies and directions for future development
Serve as a subject matter expert in the design and implementation of information technology (IT) systems integrating epidemiologic, laboratory and other information from a scientific perspective
Work closely with laboratory scientists and other health informatics scientists in the design of bioinformatics tools and systems that support advanced data query and automation of data analysis and implement these tools within a public health information system
Work closely with IT specialists and other health informatics scientists and specialists in the development of quality control software and software programs to audit data integrity and evaluate data entry software reliability, collaborating with users within and outside the agency to refine and enhance the database
Utilize database software, communications software, operating systems, statistical analysis systems, and bioinformatics software to ensure database and software are compatible with other applicable environmental, epidemiologic, and surveillance systems both within and outside the agency
Manage projects and oversee contracts involved with public health bioinformatics

Basic Qualifications:
Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree: major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.
Minimum Qualifications:
To qualify at the GS-13 grade level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-12 grade level, which must include the following experience: providing scientific advice, consultation and leadership in the design and implementation of information technology (IT) systems within a public health infrastructure; and designing and providing advice on the application of bioinformatics analysis tools.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Education
Copy of your transcripts or equivalent documentation is required for positions with an education requirement, or if you are qualifying based on education or a combination of education and experience. An official transcript will be required if you are selected.
