About the Position: This position is located at the Rock Island Arsenal Joint Manufacturing and Technology Center (RIA-JMTC).
Duties
Pass on instructions received from supervisor and starts work (e.g. by assigning immediate tasks to individual members of the group led).
Ensure needed plans, blueprints, material, and tools are available and needed stock is obtained from supply locations.
Check work progress and when finished and checks for compliance with supervisor’s instructions on work sequence procedures, methods, and deadlines.
Ensure safety and housekeeping rules are followed (e.g. ensures machine capacities are not exceeded and tools are properly used).
Work along others, setting the pace.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Employee shifts are rotated on a regularly scheduled basis.
- May require a pre-employment and annual physical examination.
Qualifications
Position may be filled as a Term Appointment NTE 13 months. Term appointments may be extended beyond six (6) years, up to eight (8) years. With DoD approval, Term appointments may be extended beyond eight (8) years.
Current permanent Federal employees (to include permanent Army employees) applying for a Term appointment will be appointed/converted into a Term appointment with no statutory return rights back to a permanent position.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Machinist Leader without more than normal supervision. The work of the position normally includes: Ability to lead/work beside Machinist in a manufacturing environment, which includes, but not limited to the following: set up and operate specialized or non-standard machine tools (i.e. jig borers, precision boring mills or Numerical Control (NC) machines) to complete assigned work; resolve problems concerning machining procedures to keep operations running - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

Physical Efforts: Work requires standing, bending, reaching, and frequent handling of objects weighing up to 20 pounds and occasionally weighing as much as 45 pounds. Hoists, hand trucks, and other workers are available for heavier items.
Working Conditions: Work in a well lighted, heated, ventilated shop. Exposed to dust from grinding, oil from machines, dirt, heat, noises, and times. subject to the hazards of burns from hot metal chips, dust in the lungs, cuts, bruises, injuries to hands from use of machine and hand tools, skin irritation from contact with coolants, lubricants, abrasive compounds, and to strains from infrequent moving, lifting, and handling of heavy items. Wears safety glasses, safety shoes, and other safety apparel and equipment as required.
