Duties
The incumbent is responsible for providing civil engineering advice and guidance on the design and construction of existing and/or new infrastructure and facilities throughout Glacier National Park. Incumbent is also responsible for applying knowledge and best internationally recognized industry standard practices for project management as per the project management institute and integrate the NPS organization and culture to manage park projects. The interdisciplinary nature of this position requires integrating knowledge of outdoor recreation, resource management, environmental compliance, engineering, and architectural engineering in order to manage a variety of simple-to-complex projects.
The incumbent provides engineering expertise for the design and construction of simple-to-complex single and multi-disciplined projects with the goal of improving visitor experience and protecting and restoring natural and cultural resources. Projects include: rehabilitating visitor centers, developing campsites, replacing lodging facilities, constructing employee housing, replacing water and wastewater systems and treatment facilities, relocating underground utilities, reconstructing roads, removing and replacing bridges, rebuilding trails, constructing parking and bus facilities, developing new public transportation system, removing or reusing administrative structures, rehabilitating mechanical and electrical systems and restoring park acreage to its natural state.
Physical Demands: The work is typically performed in a field setting with minimal physical demands. The work regularly combines both office and field assignments. Field work requires physical exertion, such as long periods of standing, or recurring and considerable walking, stooping, bending, crouching, crawling, and climbing such as in regular and periodic construction activities and field inspections.
Working Conditions: The work is usually performed visiting field sites. Field site visits are typically performed in either an outdoor setting subject to weather changes, diverse terrain, and safety hazards associated with working around complex features and/or construction, or an industrial setting subject to noise, fumes, and moving machinery. Safety precautions and protocols are observed at all times and the incumbent complies with safety instructions and regulations and ensures individual and others' safety by promptly reporting unsafe acts, unsafe conditions, and accidents to the supervisor. The work involves regular and recurring exposure to moderate risks, discomforts, and unpleasantness such as: high noise levels, infectious materials, or toxic or irritating chemicals; travel in safety approved small aircraft and water craft; high winds and low or high temperatures; insects; adverse weather conditions; noxious fumes; or flammable liquids.
This position will be located within the Maintenance Division in Yellowstone National Park. Elevation at Mammoth is 6,200 feet. Temperatures vary from an average of 70 degrees Fahrenheit in summer to sub-zero at times in winter. A school is available, with kindergarten through 12, in Gardiner, Montana, five miles north of headquarters. Free bus transportation is provided for school children between Mammoth and Gardiner. Many community facilities such as stores, a drugstore, day care, motels, and restaurants are available in Gardiner. A medical clinic is available in Mammoth. All other services are available within 55 to 75 miles from Mammoth.

BASIC REQUIREMENT: A. Possess a bachelor's degree in Engineering that included courses accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering (ABET); OR included differential & integral calculus AND course in 5 of these areas of engineering science or physics: (1) statics/dynamics; (2) strength of materials; (3) fluid mechanics/hydraulics; (4) thermodynamics; (5) electrical fields/circuits; (6) nature & properties of materials; or (7) optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics or electronics.

B. Possess a combination of education & experience including engineering coursework in physical & mathematical science & experience in one of the branches of engineering, AND I have one of the following: (1) a current professional engineer registration; (2) passed the Engineer-in-Training (EIT) exam or similar examination; (3) completed 60 semester hours of coursework specified above; (4) completed bachelor's degree in a related field AND have 1 year or more of professional engineering experience under professional engineering supervision and guidance.

To qualify for this position at the GS-12 grade level, you must possess the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience equipped me with the particular knowledge, skill, and ability to perform successfully the duties of a Civil Engineer. Examples of specialized experience include: development of civil engineering project construction drawings, technical specifications, and cost estimates as well as project management of multiple concurrent projects as substantiated by my resume/application; knowledge of project management principles and concepts; application of professional engineering principles, practices, procedures of project development; managing contractors or other project team members and providing operational leadership principles and risk management regarding work safety.
Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
