You will serve as a CRITICAL COATING AND PAINT APPLICATION INSPECTOR (SHIPS) in the Quality Assurance Department (Code 130) of PSNS and IMF.

Duties

You will demonstrate extensive knowledge of the theory, principles, techniques, and practices of surface preparation, coating application and coating inspections, and the data analysis as it relates to the shipyard quality inspection program. You will review and understand applicable Technical Work Directions, shipyard instructions, references, and Objective Quality Evidence (OQE) documentation for certification of critical coating processes. You will observe and document Critical Coating preservation in progress, inspecting the application and certifying that the application is in accordance with the requirements. You will ensure that the data contained within the Objective Quality Evidence (OQE) is accurate, precise and in complete compliance with all NAVSEA and locally invoked technical requirements. You will ensure the application of high-performance critical coatings and paints to a variety of standards, to provide materials, equipment and products the capabilities to maximize their productivity and operational life cycles. You will use various measurement devices such as surface finish analyzers, various micrometers, audio-tube testers, calipers, feeler gauges for Objective Quality Evidence (OQE). You will perform reviews and use a variety of techniques to examine and measure interconnected piping and system components that are required to have close tolerances and thickness specifications.

  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • You must be willing and able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government passport.
  • You must be willing and able to work an uncommon tour of duty (may include weekend, nights, overtime, or holidays).
  • You will be required to work a Shift Work schedule. A Shift Work schedule describes work performed with varying and/or rotating shifts.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • You must be willing and able to work onboard ships.
  • You must be willing and able to work in small and/or confined spaces.
  • You must be willing and able to climb ladders and scaffolding.
  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
