The Science Research and Projects Division at MSFC is seeking experienced and visionary Team Leads to manage thematic components of its rapidly growing Earth and Space Sciences Data Informatics portfolio. Candidates will lead teams to apply and innovate a breadth of multidisciplinary informatics, data management and curation, and develop advanced artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) tools and techniques for application to myriad science and engineering problems.

Duties

Leads a team to assess community needs for advancing the next generation of approaches to manage, curate, manipulate, and mine large datasets for enhancing science discovery and advancing knowledge. Leads development of Artificial Intelligence (AI)/Machine Learning (ML) tools for advancement of large language models, foundational models to predict complex physical systems, image analysis, big data reduction and new data product development. Leads, enables, and advances NASA’s open science practices related to data collection, reduction, analysis, and advanced visualization, to include software development and documentation across NASA’s science disciplines. Advances cloud-based scientific research and discovery capabilities through enabling science algorithm development and data use. Engages organizations within NASA MSFC, and across NASA’s Science and Exploration Directorates to identify a common repository of Data Science practices and tools toward for use in applications across NASAs science and exploration missions. Fosters a culture of engagement, diversity, inclusiveness, excellence and innovation. Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Education Requirement (in the Education section below), to qualify for this position you must meet the requirements below and have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade, which has equipped you with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above. NASA utilizes OPM-approved qualification and rating requirements specific for Aerospace Technology (AST) positions which recognizes NASA's unique aerospace work. The specific qualifications and minimum education requirements are further described below and within the education section of the job announcement. Vacant research positions may be filled at one of several grade levels depending upon the scientific impact of the person selected. A review may be required to determine the appropriate grade level of the position and supplemental materials may be required from the selectee. Please keep this in mind when indicating the lowest grade you will accept. To qualify for GS-14, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-13 level: Utilizing data science tools and cloud computing in an open science framework to enhance discovery, production, or application of NASA's digital resources and science datasets contributing to significant project outcomes; Developing data science tools and processes for effectively processing, presenting, or managing large scientific datasets, information, and related software of a complex science research project; Assessing user needs, developing solutions, or applying data science practices and Artificial Intelligence (AI)/Machine Learning (ML) tools to support science data processing, product creation, modeling and simulation, science discovery, or knowledge management. Education

Basic Education Requirement: You must have successfully completed a bachelor's degree with a major in one of the following:


a) Engineering from a college or university that has ABET accredited engineering programs
b) Physical Science, Mathematics, Life Science or other field of Science
c) Computer Science that included 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours of course work in any combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science with at least half of those hours in mathematics and statistics courses that included differential and integral calculus; and that provided an in-depth knowledge of theoretical and practical applications of computer science, including digital computer system architecture and system software organization, the representation and transformation of information structures, and the theoretical models for such representations and transformations.

If you did not complete a qualifying bachelor's degree, you may be eligible if you have obtained a graduate degree in an AST qualifying field, as listed above.

Degrees in engineering technology are not considered qualifying for this position.
