You will serve as a CONSTRUCTION MECHANIC in the PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT of NAVFAC SOUTHWEST.

Duties

You will maintain, install, repair and weatherproof roofs to include repair or replacement of sheathing, boards, beams and joints. You will maintain, repair, alter and construct masonry structures (i.e., piers, walls, abutments, etc.) using a variety of concrete, brick, block, etc. You will install, modify and repair new and existing utility, supply and equipment, such as sewage, water, oil and gas distribution systems, berm and sump pump systems, and faucets. You will measure, cut, bend and thread pipe, and remove valves, regulators, pumps, etc. You will prepare various surfaces for finish by smoothing, filling, shaping and leveling using all types of patching compounds. You will fabricate, modify, repair, assemble and install sheet metal parts, items and assemblies for utility systems.

  • You may be required to obtain and maintain licenses for the operation of Fork Lift, High Lift (JLG) and/or Construction equipment, upon notification.
  • You may be required to obtain and maintain scaffolding competent certification, backflow, medical gas and respirator certification should it be required.

Qualifications

Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the job elements and screen out listed below. This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is: ABILITY TO DO THE WORK OF THE POSITION WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION including: 1) Welding, using different types of metals and alloys; 2) Repairing wooden objects and structures; and preparing buildings or offices for paint jobs; and 3) Installing doors and windows.
