DOT supports the movement of people and goods over land, sea, and air with responsibility for the nation’s critical infrastructure. The Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer (CAIO) plays a critical role in advancing the Department’s strategic plan. Transportation safety is DOT’s highest priority and requires an effective AI program that implements OMB’s guidance and aligns with NIST’s AI Risk Management Framework as appropriate. 

Duties

The Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer (CAIO) holds primary responsibility for coordinating the Department's use of Al, promoting Al innovation, and managing risks from the use of Al. The CAIO performs these duties in partnership with other Departmental officials, while reporting to the Office of the Chief Information Officer (CIO) and receiving direction from the CIO organization and the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Research and Technology.

Qualifications

To meet the minimum qualifications for this position, you must meet the specialized experience requirements.To qualify for the SL-00, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equal or equivalent to the GS-15, it must include experience: overseeing and coordinating efforts of an artificial intelligence program or innovative information technology program for an organization, including assessing appropriate risk management considerations; and building secure, innovative, and ethical artificial intelligence use cases; AND overseeing process improvement, strategic planning, project management, and change management techniques for an artificial intelligence program; to include advocating for and introducing artificial intelligence and innovation; and enabling roles and technology platforms in an organization.
