This position is located in the Office of the General Counsel, Executive for Immigration Review, U.S. Department of Justice. The detailee serves as an Attorney Advisor - The Freedom of Information Act Unit (FOIA).

Duties

EOIR is seeking two current Department of Justice attorneys to serve as detailees on a non-reimbursable basis. This detail offers an opportunity to support a leadership office in carrying out its responsibilities. This position is specifically with the Freedom of Information Act Unit of the General Counsel's office. The detail is for 180-day and may be extended for an additional 180 days. The Attorney will be responsible for: Providing legal review and approval of public records postings pursuant to a litigation settlement order regarding unpublished BIA decisions. Redacting unpublished decisions and other documents in accordance with various exemptions to the Freedom of Information Act. Prior FOIA knowledge is not required. Performs other related work. The work may be completed by telework and or remote, based on employee current work schedule.

Requirements

  • You must complete a background investigation, credit check, and drug test.
  • Selective Service Registration is required, as applicable.
  • This is a detail NTE 6 months (180 days).

  • Salary payments must be by direct deposit to a financial institution.
  • Must be a current EOIR employee and provide a current Notice of Personnel Action SF-50 verifying EOIR employment.

Qualifications

Applicant must be a current Department of Justice GS-13 or GS-14 Attorney. In order to qualify for the Attorney Advisor (FOIA) position, you must meet the following minimum qualifications: Education: Applicants must possess an LL.B. or a J.D. degree. (Provide the month and year in which you obtained your degree and the name of the College or University from which it was conferred/awarded.) AND Licensure: Applicants must be an active member of the bar, duly licensed and authorized to practice law as an attorney under the laws of any state, territory of the U.S., or the District of Columbia. (Provide the month and year in which you obtained your first license and the State from which it was issued.) AND Required Experience: For GS-13: Applicants must have two (2) full years (24 months) of post J.D. or LL.B professional legal experience. For GS-14: Applicants must have three (3) full years (36 months) of post J.D. or LL.B professional legal experience. NOTE: Qualifying experience is calculated only after receipt of J.D. or LL.B.
