If selected you serve as mechanic and operator of a highly sophisticated processing and packaging equipment used to process and insect diet for the purpose of mass rearing insects.

Duties

The duties may include, but are not limited to: Maintain processing equipment for making insect diet by scheduling preventative maintenance and performing minor repairs and part replacement. Accommodate changing production demands by determining amount of diet to be weighted, mixed and processed. Trouble shoot pumps, ribbon blenders, pneumatic lifts, augers, Tiromat form-fill machine, twin scree extruder, conveyor belts, K-Tron feeder system, steam systems and refrigeration units. Use hand and power tools, acetylene torch, gas and electric welding equipment, meters, sheet metal work, electronics and wood working to maintain, repairer and modify machinery. Keep accurate records identifying calibrations, modifications and preventative maintenance work order log. Follow established OSHA safety rules and regulations and maintains a safe and clean work environment. Operates and trains other to use insect diet processing and implant machinery.

Requirements

  • You must be a US Citizen or US National.
  • Individuals who were born male after 12/31/1959 must be Selective Service registered or exempt.

  • All USDA employees are required to be enrolled in Continuous Vetting, which authorizes government agencies to receive notifications of criminal activity on individuals who hold low risk, public trust, or national security positions.
  • Work involves lifting, bending, standing, twisting and working on concrete floors, which may be slippery around machinery.
  • Lifting, pushing and pulling 50 lbs is routine; lifting may occasionally exceed 50 lbs.
  • Work environment is dusty and one may endure high/low temperatures and humidity for extended intervals of 2-3 hours.
  • Policies require one to wear protective masks, ear protection, as well as s protective clothing and eye protection for some job duties.
  • Must maintain certification for high pressure steam operations.
  • May be required to operate a forklift.
