The Supervisory Social Worker assumes the supervisory and administrative responsibility for the management of the assigned social workers who function within the following areas and programs: Outpatient Mental Health Clinic, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Clinical Team, Psychosocial Rehabilitation and Recovery Clinic, Substance Abuse Treatment Program, Inpatient Psychiatric Social Workers, Mental Health and Substance Abuse Case Managers, and Primary Care Behavioral Health Social Workers.

Duties

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Providing administrative, technical, and clinical supervision necessary for accomplishing the work of the unit. Performing the administrative and personnel management function relative to staff supervised which includes establishing guidelines and performance expectations for staff, clearly communicating them through the formal employee performance management system, and providing informal feedback and periodically evaluating employee performance. Resolving informal complaints and grievances. Developing work improvement plans, recommending personnel actions as necessary. Assuring the Social Workers whom they supervise are aware of and adhere to all current directives of VHA, and meet current JCAHO standards, State licensure standards, and VA-OIG expectations. Conducting ongoing intensive reviews and appraisals to ensure the accomplishment of objectives and adherence to standards set by governing bodies. Providing technical assistance to monitor activities and program reviews and to develop information analysis. Using sound judgement to interpret trends and patterns; the application of guidelines; and the recommendation of program enhancements. Responsible for key project activities related to planning, developing and implementing the project component. Have a master's degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Grade Determinations: In addition to meeting the basic requirements stated above, the following qualifications criteria must be met in determining the appropriate grade assignment of candidates. GS-13 Supervisory Social Workercandidates must have the following: Experience/Education. One year of experience equivalent to the GS-12 grade level. Experience must demonstrate possession of advanced practice skills in a specialty area or in administration demonstrating progressively more professional competency and judgment. Candidate may have certification or other post-master's degree training from a nationally recognized professional organization or university that includes a defined curriculum/course of study and internship, or equivalent supervised professional experience. Licensure. Individuals assigned as supervisory social workers must be licensed or certified at the advanced practice level, and must be able to provide supervision for licensure. Ability to ensure provision of clinical social work services by supervised social workers. Ability to delegate authority, manage priorities, coordinate work, and follow up on pending issues to complete duties in an accurate and timely fashion. Ability to analyze organizational and operational problems, develop and implement solutions that result in efficient operations, and use data effectively to manage workload, quality, performance, and productivity within the service. Ability to provide staff training and development. Preferred Experience: Mental Health, Substance Abuse Treatment and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder experience and a minimum of two (2) years in a supervisory role.
