The Oncology Clinical Pharmacy Technician provides administrative, clerical, and basic clinical support to the pharmacist managed Oral Chemotherapy Clinic. Specific work assignments include participation in daily activities of the South Texas (STX) Oral Chemo Clinic, laboratory value monitoring, telephone logistical support, supplemental patient education communication, coordination of specialty drug orders and delivery, rescheduling no-show or cancelled patients, and other duties.

Duties

Major duties include but are not limited to: Independently gather, evaluate, and analyze data of patients on oral chemo with minimal toxicity. Conduct patient interviews, including medication history, adherence, effectiveness, needs for medication refills and time to return to lab for patients tolerating therapy. Routinely review lab results for abnormal lab values. Educate patients on the proper use and care of their medications. Assess and documents patient comprehension. Maintain patient's electronic record. Prioritize operational and assigned clinical functions. Participate in QA/QI processes and programs as assigned. Provide supplemental reinforcement education for patients concerning Oral Chemotherapy Clinic operational policies or need for medication and laboratory appointment compliance. Participation in pertinent Oncology lectures and discussions. Assist in the training of new pharmacy staff. Provide telephone triage and patient follow-up as assigned. Communicate (orally and in writing) and follow-up on requests in a timely manner based on the needs of the clinic team/supervisor. Contact patients to reschedule missed or cancelled appointments. Maintain count of future clinic workload. Perform audits of patient enrollment. Coordinate REMS applications and updates for oral chemotherapy. Work with procurement to maintain appropriate pharmacy stock. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Telework: Available Virtual: This is not a virtual position. Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Certification: For positions above the full performance level, the employee must pass a national certification exam and hold an active national certification through either: Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB), Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT). OR National Healthcareer Association (NHA), Certified Pharmacy Technician (ExCPT). English Language Proficiency: Pharmacy Technician candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English to be appointed as authorized by 38 U.S.C. § 7403(f). May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grandfathering Provision. Pharmacy technicians employed in VHA on the effective date of this qualification standard are considered to have met all qualification requirements for the title, series and grade held, including positive education and licensure/certification/registration that are part of the basic requirements of the occupation. For employees who do not meet all the basic requirements in this standard but who met the qualifications applicable to the position at the time they were appointed to it, the following provisions apply: Employees may be reassigned, promoted up to and including the full performance (journey) level or changed to lower grade within the occupation but may not be promoted beyond the journeyman level or placed in supervisory or managerial positions. Employees in an occupation that requires a licensure/certification/ registration only at higher grade levels must meet the licensure/ certification/registration requirement before they can be promoted to those higher grade levels. Employees who are appointed on a temporary basis prior to the effective date of the qualification standard may not have their temporary appointment extended or be reappointed on a temporary or permanent basis until they fully meet the basic requirements of the standard. Employees who are converted to title 38 hybrid status under this provision and subsequently leave the occupation lose protected status and must meet the full VA qualification standard requirements in effect at the time of re-entry to the occupation. Employees initially grandfathered into this occupation who subsequently obtain additional education and/or licensure/certification/registration that meet all the basic requirements of this qualification standard must maintain the required credentials as a condition of employment in the occupation. Grade Determinations: Experience. Candidates must possess one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-07) AND demonstrate the KSAs below. Examples of specialized experience at the GS-07 level includes: Mentoring and training lower graded pharmacy technicians in the practice setting. Assisting advanced/ specialized pharmacy technicians and participating in performance improvement initiatives. Using independent judgement to perform the full range of duties in the pharmacy. Functioning as staff pharmacy technicians in various locations of the pharmacy, including pharmacy contact centers and other non-traditional pharmacy locations, with minimal oversight. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs). In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs for all GS-08 assignments and meet any additional KSAs for the assignment, if indicated: Comprehensive knowledge of concepts, principles, methodology and policies in a specialized area or section of pharmacy (such as sterile compounding, controlled substances, automation, clinical pharmacy, contact center, etc.) Skill in training and orienting new and existing pharmacy facility employees and students on proper policies and procedures. Ability to evaluate, analyze and coordinate workflow and work activities within a specialized area or section of the pharmacy. Certification. For positions above the full performance level, the employee must pass a national certification exam and hold an active national certification through either: PTCB as a CPhT. OR NHA as a ExCPT. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is above the full performance level, GS-08. Physical Requirements: The work is sedentary. Some work may require movement between offices, hospitals, warehouses, and similar areas for meetings and to conduct work. Work may also require walking/standing, in conjunctions with travel to and attendance at meetings and/or conferences away from the work site. Incumbent may carry and lift light items weighing less than 15 pounds.
