This is a Maintenance Mechanic position WG-4749-10 in our Maintenance & Operations Section, Facility Management Service at the Ann Arbor VAMC. The incumbent is responsible for installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of a wide variety of kitchen, refrigeration, cleaning, patient related equipment, and other equipment used throughout the facility and our off-site locations.
Duties
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Repair, Install, and Maintenance
Incumbent can troubleshoot, repair, install, and maintain a variety of complex items of equipment related to but not limited to kitchen, cleaning, and patient equipment.
Troubleshoots equipment such as but not limited to:
Kitchen Equipment: dishwashing machines, food waste disposals, food preparation and serving equipment, ovens, microwaves, fryers, kettles, and grills.
Patient Equipment: beds, pumps, exam chairs, regulators, heat lamps, wheelchairs, skytrons, otoscopes, and exam tables.
Refrigeration Equipment: refrigerators, freezers, coolers, and ice machines.
EMS Equipment: floor scrubbers, polishers, vacuums, steamers, washers, and dryers.
Misc. Equipment: Dock lifts, postal scales, golf carts, man-lifts, and hydraulic repairs.
Electronics & Electrical Troubleshooting: circuit boards and control software and makes the necessary changes and adjustments. Also works with electricity from 5VDC up through 3 Phase 480VAC, as well as Live Power Troubleshooting on many of the pieces of Equipment including 3 phase 208VAC and 480VAC.
Electrical Equipment Repair - 45%
Interpret instruction both orally and in writing to perform the assigned task at hand with little or no supervision. Demonstrates the ability to perform duties at a journeyman level. Knowledge of electrical codes, regulations, and theory to perform tasks in a safe manner and in accordance to established standards. Installs, modifies, overhauls, maintains, troubleshoots and repairs building, components, and equipment that are intricate complexity. Determine components causing malfunctions or invalid readings. Interprets and applies technical information from manufacturers' specifications, schematics, block diagrams and technical orders. Determine operation of the circuits. Hydraulic Systems Repair - 25%
Demonstrates the ability to interpret schematics and diagrams to perform the tasks assigned with little or no supervision. Has the ability to diagnose and repair hydraulic pumps, cylinders, & motors. Is also able to assemble hydraulic pumps, cylinders, & motors. Performs tasks at a journeyman level. Uses test equipment and measuring devices such as bench test sets, micrometers, torque gauges, multimeters, gauge blocks, and calipers to inspect, disassemble, repair, and test parts and subassemblies of hydraulic, mechanical, and pneumatic assemblies and components. They determine whether to rework or replace parts that exceed allowable wear thresholds based on visual detection of unusual wear patterns or measurements of disassembled parts compared to directly applicable go-no-go specifications. Plumbing Repair - 20%
The incumbent demonstrates the ability to work at a journeyman level. The work involves installing, modifying, maintaining, repairing, troubleshooting, and testing of new and existing water and drain piping, low pressure steam line, including steam traps, radiators, and strainers. Shall modify, repair, and troubleshoot utility systems, supply, and disposal systems, including equipment such as dish machines, garbage disposals, grinders, kettles, sinks, water softeners, and any other equipment involved in sewage, water, oil, and gas distribution systems. Performs preventive maintenance work as necessary to keep building piping systems in good repair.
Fabricating - 10%
Demonstrates the ability to work at a journeyman level with little to know supervision. The incumbent can fabricate tools and parts needed to make the necessary repairs to the facilities equipment. The work requires the ability to use lapping machines, drill presses, grinders, demagnetizers, and other power and hand tools to remove imperfections such as scratches and rough edges; and to assemble parts into assemblies and components by shimming, honing, lapping, or selective fitting from groups of like parts.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:
Physical Effort: Frequently handles objects weighing 50lbs. and occasionally carries objects weighing 50lbs. and over for considerable distances. Pushes, pulls, reaches, walks, stands, crawls, kneels, bends, and works in cramped positions over and under machinery of all types for prolonged periods of time.
Working Conditions: Usually performs work inside areas that are adequately lighted, ventilated, and heated. Floor and deck surfaces are sometimes uneven, oily, and slippery. Frequent exposure to moving objects and sharp edges with the possibility of cuts and bruises, and to noise and vibration from machines. Occasionally climbs and works from ladders and staging, possibility of serious injury from slipping and falling. Dirt, grease, and dampness are frequently encountered. Various protective devices such as hard hats, gloves, safety shoes, and glasses are used.
