This position serves as the Maintenance Mechanic (Electrical/HVAC) for the Facilities Management Service (FMS) at VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System (VAAAHS) under the supervision of the Electrician Supervisor. The incumbent is required to work under minimal supervision and resolve problems associated with the work of the office.

Duties

Incumbent must be able to install and repair systems to condition the air for different kinds of structures such as warehouses, large office buildings and the VAAAHCS Medical Center. This will include areas with special requirements such as communication centers, electronic data processing centers, operating rooms, laboratories, clean rooms, and areas with sensitive equipment. The systems will use a variety of methods of air conditioning such as mechanical compression, vapor compression, absorption, stream jet or air cycle. Incumbent knows the principles and theories of air conditioning and refrigeration such as the refrigeration cycle, heat transfer laws, the use of refrigerant table; how to calculate airflow and the pressure-temperature characteristics for the different systems to locate and repair faulty equipment swiftly and to reduce inoperative time to a minimum. Incumbent must have knowledge of a variety of compressors such as gear, reciprocating, centrifugal or rotary pump, and a variety of refrigerant controls such as those with low- and high-pressure side floats, automatic thermostatic expansion valves, capillary or choke types, and those based on volume or quality changes. Incumbent must have knowledge of a variety of complicated motor controls such as hermetically sealed motors and pressure controls, thermostatic motor controls, full and semi automatic defrosting controls, relays, and other controls to protect against overload or overheating. Incumbent must be able to install, recognize the cause of faulty equipment, and make repairs on a variety of domestic and commercial refrigeration and air conditioning unit and systems such as walk-in and reach-in coolers, refrigerators, deep freezers, evaporative coolers, attic and evaporative fans and other equipment of comparable complexity. Incumbent must be able to install, modify, repair, maintain, troubleshoot, test, and load new and existing electrical lines, circuits, systems, and associated fixtures, controls, and equipment. Knowledge of how various electrical systems, circuits, equipment, and controls are installed, operate, and work together to support industrial operations, computer complexes, or similar complex electrical loads. Incumbent works form building plans, blueprints, wiring diagrams, engineering drawings, and electrical maintenance and repair manuals to plan and lay out the routing, placement type, size, gauge, balance, load, continuity, and safe operation of electrical lines. Circuits, systems, equipment, and controls. They determine the place distribution panels, boxes, fittings, and connections and install wiring, couplings, conduit, relays, fixtures, transformers, and other electrical devices including electrical service entrances. Knowledge of repair and maintenance requirements and the capability of commercial repair shops. Ability to adjust work operations and schedules to meet emergency or changing programs on vehicle related requirements within available resources and with minimum sacrifice of quality and quantity of service provided. Ability to communicate with personnel at all levels of responsibility and authority. Ability to convey ideas, recommendations, and guidance to others in verbal and written form. Ability to plan, organizes, manage, research, interpret, and apply regulations, directives, policies, and guidance. Knowledge and ability to analyze information and reports to ensure efficient and effective transportation program accomplishment. Skill in applying knowledge to plan and accomplish a variety of complex work assignments and/or to identify, analyzes, and resolves issues and problems. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements: Work requires good coordination as well as manual dexterity. Physical effort is required in making repairs. Incumbent is required to bend, stoop, crawl, walk, climb, and lift heavy objects up to 50 pounds. Incumbent frequently works on top of equipment at heights up to 18 feet above the ground. Hoists, holders, and pulleys are operated when removing units such as large compressors, condensers, and chillers. Repairs can be made from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms where the parts of systems worked on are frequently in hard-to-reach places. Working Conditions: Incumbent is occasionally required to work outside, on top of buildings, in drafty attic spaces, and in cramped areas with low overheads. Incumbent will utilize authorized safety equipment when dealing with potential problems that may consist of toxic refrigerants, carbon monoxide, scalds, electrical shock, gas, propane, or chemical fumes. Incumbent is subject to cuts, bruises, and burns. Exposure to repeated, prolonged, or concentrated amounts of refrigerant gases may cause toxic effects to eyes, skin, and internal organs.
