THIS IS A NORTH DAKOTA NATIONAL GUARD TITLE 32 EXCEPTED SERVICE POSITION.
This ND National Guard position is for a SURFACE MAINTENANCE MECHANIC LEADER, Position Description Number D1288000 and is part of the ND CSMS, National Guard.
Duties
As a Surface Maintenance Mechanic Leader, the purpose of this position is to serve as a working leader of three or more Surface Maintenance Mechanics, WG-5801-11. Performs mechanic duties such as maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, inspection, and/or overhaul of a variety of complex combat, tactical, commercial, and special purpose vehicles and equipment having complicated mechanical and nonmechanical systems with a variety of interconnected systems. Provides technical guidance and specialized team leadership to lower grade employees.
Assigns work orders to specific crewmembers and selects workers for various jobs on the basis of knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Assures that there is enough work to keep everyone in the work crew busy.
Performs maintenance, troubleshooting, and major repair on heavy-duty mobile equipment, combat, tactical, and automotive vehicles.
Troubleshoots equipment with a variety of the mechanically complex major systems and diagnoses difficult performance problems and the cause of mechanical failures by means of visual and auditory checks, uses test equipment such as engine analyzers, compression testers, voltmeters, ohmmeters, pressure gauges and computer diagnostic tools.
Removes and disassembles engines and complex major assemblies, sub-assemblies, components, and fuel, hydraulic, and oil pressure systems.
Independently performs repairs and maintenance functions with little or no supervision in remote locations.
Conducts readiness and repair inspections on vehicles and associated equipment supported by the activity.
Performs electrical repairs on complex state of the art electrical and electronic systems requiring extensive training on specialized diagnostic equipment to identify problems.
Assists in the maintenance of production reports and records, and makes recommendations to the supervisor.
Requirements

- This is an excepted service position that requires membership in a compatible military assignment in the ND National Guard, required prior to the effective date of placement.
- Selectee will be required to wear the military uniform.
- Acceptance of an excepted service position constitutes concurrence with these requirements as a condition of employment.
- Applicants who are not currently a member of the ND National Guard must be eligible for immediate membership and employment in the ND National Guard in the military grade listed in this announcement.
- Males born after 31 December 1959 must be registered for Selective Service.
- Federal employment suitability as determined by a background investigation.
- May be required to successfully complete a probationary period.
- Participation in direct deposition is mandatory.
- You must be able to obtain and maintain a secret security clearance.
- This position is covered by the Domestic Violence Misdemeanor Amendment (30 Sep 96) of the Gun Control Act (Lautenberg Amendment) of 1968. An individual convicted of a qualifying crime of domestic violence may not perform the duties of this position.
- Irregular and/or overtime (compensatory) hours may be required to support operational requirements or contingencies or may be required to work hours outside of the normal duty day.
- Must have a valid state driver's license for the state in which they live or are principally employed.

QUALITY OF EXPERIENCE
Length of time is not of itself qualifying. GENERAL EXPERIENCE: Applicant must possess Experience or training that has provided the candidate with sufficient knowledge to complete the work of this occupational series. Experience or training which demonstrates the candidate's ability to lead other technicians engaged in the duties performed by this occupational series.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicant must possess 24 months of experience in addition to the journeyman level knowledge; 1) experience which demonstrates the ability to plan, organize, and lead the work of others in fields directly related the repair function of this occupational series; 2) ability to perform administrative functions; to read and interpret a variety of technical publications used in the repair of supported equipment; and 3) ability to provide guidance to others in work related directly to this occupational series.
