This position is located in the Critical Care Therapy and Respiratory Care Section of the Critical Care Medicine Department, Clinical Center. This section is currently seeking a Registered, Supervisory Respiratory Therapist to add to their team. Ensure to describe your experience in your resume.

Duties

Leading Respiratory Therapist for the Critical Care Team to administer conventional, specialized and complex respiratory therapy treatments to a variety of patients. Instructing employees in specific tasks and job techniques and makes available written instructions, reference materials and supplies. Reporting to supervisor on performance, progress and training needs of employees, and on behavior problems. Providing on the job training to new employees in accordance with established procedures and practices. Maintaining relationships with personnel from the Department of Laboratory Medicine (DLM) and the Department of Clinical Research Informatics (DCRI) to assist in the electronic performance and quality management of the lab. Developing and providing reports to evaluate activity and cost of the laboratory. Distributing and balancing the workload among employees in accordance with established work flow or job specialization, assures timely accomplishment of the assigned workload, and assures that each employee has enough work to keep busy. Interpreting physician orders, providing specialized therapy to critically ill patients that usually require adaptation of established technical procedures. Participating with the physician in planning, instituting, evaluating and devising a patient care plan for pulmonary hygiene. Evaluating the physician order for appropriateness and adjusts the order if necessary. Assisting in the examination and observation of patients by performing such duties as taking diagnostic histories, conducting physical examinations, and performing diagnostic screening tests

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship requirement or proof of being a U.S. National must be met by closing date.

  • Males born after December 31, 1959 must be registered with the Selective Service.
  • Applicants must meet all qualifications requirements within thirty (30) calendar days of the closing date of this announcement, including time in grade.

  • This position is designated as an "emergency essential" position and the selected candidate will be considered an "emergency essential" employee.
  • This position requires weekend hours, night shifts, regular or rotational shifts, holiday hours.
  • This position has on-call or call-back requirements.
  • Therapist regularly work in an intensive care unit with patients who have severe respiratory and other medical problems. There is recurring exposure to contagious diseases and hazardous gases.
  • Selectee may be subject to a medical surveillance program due to the potential exposure to hazardous environments or substances.
  • Frequent use of protective clothing is required to prevent disease, spread of infection and penetration of radiation from use of x-ray devices at the bedside during procedures on patients.
  • Therapist regularly works in an intensive care unit with patients who have severe respiratory and other medical problems.
  • Work requires dexterity to perform intricate procedures in confined areas.
  • The therapist must frequently bend, reach, stoop and stretch to set up and take apart equipment, position patients, and push/pull moderately heavy objects.
  • The work requires standing and walking for prolonged periods of time.
  • A one-year supervisory trial/probationary period may be required upon selection/ placement.

Qualifications

You qualify at the GS-11 level, if you meet one of the following qualification requirements: You must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of qualifying experience equivalent to at least the GS-10 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: Performing diagnostic histories, conducting physical examinations, and performing diagnostics screening tests; maintaining, and calibrating equipment such as ventilators, mass spectrometers, and hemodynamic pressure transducers to decrease patient's dependence on ventilators; record and analyze invasive and non-invasive pressures during bedside procedures; monitoring, physiological measurements during procedures and advising physicians of abnormalities; mentoring or leading other respiratory therapist.
