About the Position: This position is located at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, MD, Pulmonary Medicine Service. The Pulmonary Medicine Service consists of highly trained professionals who are dedicated to providing the highest quality comprehensive care for patients with the full range of pulmonary and critical care.

Duties
Perform technical work concerned with administering therapeutic and diagnostic respiratory care and life support to patients with cardiopulmonary deficiencies and abnormalities.
Set up and monitor a variety of complex respiratory equipment such as volume ventilators for critical care patients.
Apply advanced ventilator techniques such as positive and expiratory pressure (PEEP), intermittent mandatory ventilator (IMV), and continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP).
Assess the cardiopulmonary condition of assigned patients using data acquired through physical examination and respiratory monitoring and diagnostic equipment.
Monitor and interpret values such as pulmonary artery pressures, pulmonary capillary wedge pressures, mixed venous oxygen content, and cardiac output.
Perform blood gas analysis and interpretation and makes recommendations, and changes based on results.
Place, adjust, and replace endotracheal tubes.
Assist physicians in the performance and preparation of in-patient and out-patient bronchoscopy's.
Provide training to other respiratory therapists relative to the types of treatments given, various types of medications used, and the set up and operation of respiratory equipment including the necessary cleaning and safety precautions.
Requirements
- This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Tier 3 security investigation or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
- This position requires the incumbent to have tuberculosis testing.
- This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement. Applicants tentatively selected for appointment to this position will be required to sign a statement (Condition of Employment) consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations.
- This position may require the incumbent to work on any day or shift, including PMs, nights, weekends, holidays, or on an "on call "basis, necessary to meet mission requirements.
- This position has been designated Mission Essential. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations, the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
- This position is subject to a pre-employment drug screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.

Basic Requirement for Respiratory Therapist:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes evaluating respiratory therapy patients, and setting up, operating, or maintaining respiratory therapy equipment. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).
OR
Education: One and a half years (i.e., 27 semester hours) of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Respiratory Therapy.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total semester hours minus 18) by 9. Add the two percentages.
