These positions are located in the Office of the Director (OD), Office Research Facilities (ORF), Division of Environmental Protection (DEP), Sustainability Branch (SB).The ideal candidate will have experience with environmental compliance, interpreting environmental laws and regulations and advising others with no environmental background. This position will act as the ORF coordinator for environmental justice and climate change within the Department of Health and Human Services.
Duties
As an Environmental Protection Specialist your duties will include but are not limited to the following:
Serves as DEP's subject matter expert in environmental justice. Stays informed on the environmental justice requirements that the NIH must meet in accordance with executive orders, policies, laws, and regulations. Leads and participates in DEP, NIH, HHS, and government wide environmental justice working groups. Leads, participates, tracks, and reports on the NIH environmental justice program. Identifies components of environmental injustice that influence differential burdens of environmental exposures. Provides DEP, NIH, and HHS updates on environmental justice requirements and status updates on the NIH actions and progress to meet these requirements.
Assists in implementing the NIH Environmental Management System (NEMS), including reviewing and updating the NEMS, which requires working with environmental program managers, contractors, and sustainability goal leads.
Manages the NIH Sustainability Communications Plan to increase employee awareness and meet environmental and sustainability requirements through a comprehensive multimedia approach, including: the NIH calendar of events, global emails, NIH Green Zone newsletter, the Green listserv, the ORF YouTube Channel, the NIH Record and/or Catalyst.
Supports and provides leadership to the Sustainability Management Team, Green Team Leads Council, and the Sustainable Lab Practices Working Group, to implement the NEMS and other sustainability requirements
Serves as a technical authority in environmental management systems and policy; and ensures compliance with associated regulations and executive orders. Serves as liaison between the NIH and government regulatory bodies such as Maryland Department of the Environment.

Qualifications
To qualify at the GS-13 level, you must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of qualifying experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: providing guidance on environmental sustainability programs; providing guidance on environmental justice requirements; coordinating and collaborating with organizational staff on environmental management and sustainability programs; and assessing organizational compliance with laws, regulations, and policies governing environmental sustainability programs.
