This position is part of the WAPA-RMR-Rocky Mountain Region, Department of Energy. As a High Voltage Electrician (Lineman) Apprentice, you will serve as an apprentice lineman and enter training to become a Journeyman Level High Voltage Electrician (Lineman) after completion of a four year training period.
**This is not a remote position. The selectee will be required to be physically present at one of the duty location(s) identified.**
Duties
MAJOR DUTIES:
As a High Voltage Electrician (Lineman) Apprentice you will be in training as an apprentice in the electrical trades. During the term of the apprenticeship, the apprentice shall be provided progressively more complex and responsible training and experience in order to assure that upon completion of the term of apprenticeship, the apprentice will possess both the theoretical and practical knowledge, skill, and ability of the trade necessary to perform the full range of duties of the trade at the skilled journeyman level of competence.
The apprentice shall work under the day-to-day supervision of a craft supervisor or work leader who is the supervisor of record. In addition, an apprentice shall also be under the general direction of an apprentice instructor, who may or may not be the supervisor of record.
Apprentices are required to complete related training, including self-study training such as correspondence courses during off-duty hours as part of the apprentice program.
The apprentice may work individually, with another craftsman, or as a member of a full crew supervised by supervisory craftsman.
Work is assigned by the supervisor and/or apprentice instructor and may include work to extend over several weeks.
Instructions may be oral, written, or require the use of drawings, diagrams, or manuals.
Work is carried out independently some of the time, although contact with the supervisor or apprentice instructor is usually available.
Work is periodically spot checked for adequacy, workmanship, and timeliness.
Work is reviewed, and progress in the program, is assessed by the supervisor, apprentice instructor, and apprenticeship committee.

Physical Effort:
Work under conditions of moderate to high physical demand related to climbing, lifting, or working in strained positions. May be required to lift items weighing over 50 pounds in order to install, inspect, and repair equipment or facilities. Coordination of eyes, hands, legs, and body is required in installing and repairing equipment in confined spaces or overhead structures.
Working Conditions:
Majority of work takes place outside. The incumbent works both inside and out-of-doors and is subject to extremes of weather conditions. Works in close proximity to high voltage lines and/or equipment. Work involves climbing transmission structures averaging 65 feet but up to 500 feet on occasion, and communication towers up to 400 feet. Subject to potential for injury Subject to the normal occupational working conditions characteristic of the apprentice occupation (i.e., working aby high voltage lines, broken bones in falls from poles or structures, muscle strains from awkward positions, and cuts and bruises when handling tools and materials. Position may require nationally recognized crane certification for fixed and swing boom certification. If so, training will be provided at government expense. May be required to fly to worksites by either fixed wing aircraft or helicopter. Work may require considerable travel requiring temporary lodging away from duty station. May occasionally perform aerial transmission line patrol and may use aerial transportation to access work sites.
Education
For this position, education cannot be substituted for experience.
