Duties

Conduct investigation of all tort claims which arise within jurisdiction that were filed for personal injury damages, wrongful death damages, or property damage. Review investigative reports, testimony, interviews, case files, etc regarding tort claims to identifiy pertinent material and prepares seven paragraph memoranda, litigation reports or court pleadings. Independently investigate and makes recommendation as to settlement on all property damage claims filed by claimants who are not represented by an attorney. Assist tort attorneys and Assistant United States Attorney in settlement negotiations or trial preparation to include interviewing witnesses, preparing summaries of testimony, and analyzing same for usefulness and relevance. Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315. While probationary the incumbent can be terminated with limited appeal rights.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) assisting in performing investigations of claims filed for personal injury damages, wrongful death damages, or property damages; 2) interviewing witnesses to prepare summaries of witness testimony; 3) assisting attorneys in settlement negotiations; 4 ) preparing various legal documents such as pleadings, memoranda of law, trial briefs, complaints, answers, motions and interrogatories. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09). OR Education: Education: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position such as Legal Studies, Criminal Justice and Law. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages. Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-09).
