Duties
As a Supervisory Health Scientist you will:
Serve as a Deputy Branch Chief; direct, coordinate, and oversee work through subordinate supervisors.
Serve as a nationally recognized expert in providing CDC, regulated entities, and partners (as appropriate) reliable, comprehensive, and high-quality information on national and international biosafety and biosecurity best practices, regulatory guidance, and adult learning/training principles.
Provide subject matter expertise in the development of operational and policy decisions, review and approve critical documents such as inspection reports, decision letters, compliance letters, SOPs, guidance materials, and frequently asked questions (FAQs).
Serve as a scientific advisor to the Division Director and other agency officials, make recommendations regarding enforcement actions and work closely and collaboratively with other federal agencies and partners.
Direct scientific efforts in the design of studies conducted within or sponsored by the program and implement changes to improve operations based upon this analysis.
Serve as a subject-matter expert in support of strategic planning efforts.

Basic Qualifications:
Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree: major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education(external link) at the time the degree was obtained.
Minimum Qualifications:
To qualify at the GS-14 grade level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-13 grade level, which must include the following experience: leading, developing, and evaluating scientific and technical aspects of containment laboratory biosafety and biosecurity best practices, and regulations involving highly pathogenic organisms and toxins that have the potential to pose a severe threat to public health and safety.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Education
Copy of your transcripts or equivalent documentation is required for positions with an education requirement, or if you are qualifying based on education or a combination of education and experience. An official transcript will be required if you are selected.
