This position serves as the Fire Protection Inspector and supports the Fire Service Chief. The incumbent provides overall direction and support within the Battle Creek VA Medical Center Fire Section, Public Safety Service. .

Duties

The incumbent's duties may consist of, and are not limited to the following: Inspections of electrical systems, connections and equipment, storage of flammable materials in warehouses, shops, therapy areas, etc., the storage of chemicals, oxygen and gases used in medical purposes and for pest and weed control. Conducts scheduled fire and evacuation drills per NFPA 101. Updates and maintains required NFPA and OSHA documentation for the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), Annual Workplace Evaluation (AWE), Office of Inspector General (OIG), Accreditation on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF), and other annual or triennial medical center inspections. Develop materials and provide situational classroom training on installation fire prevention activities. Address variety of client groups in fire program methods and goals. Develops prevention messages from actual fire incidents. Interacts with a wide variety of employees and others in all aspects of fire prevention. Responds as a firefighting crew to all Medical Center emergencies. Performs firefighting duties as determined by the nature and extent of the fire and evaluate and take the necessary actions required, such as laying and disconnecting hoses, directing fire streams, operating firefighter equipment, and ventilation of burning building. Performs evacuations and rescues. Administer appropriate emergency treatments. Conducts an informational Fire Prevention Program and secures client involvement in fire prevention, detection, and suppression. Emphasizes pertinent fire prevention topics. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 07/03/2024. Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-08 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-07. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide additional SF-50's that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment. You may qualify based on your experience as described below: SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Specialized experience for the GS-08 grade level would be one year of specialized experience at the next lower grade level of GS-07. Experience that demonstrated the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position. Such duties may include (1)inspecting, controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; (2) rescue operations; (3) detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards; (4) operation of fire communications equipment; (5) controlling hazardous materials incidents and/or (6) developing, implementing, or providing training in fire protection and prevention. Applicant must be nationally certified by the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress or Pro Board as a Fire Fighter 1 & 2, Fire Officer 1, Hazardous Materials Operations, and Fire Inspector 1 & 2. You will be rated on the following Competencies for this position: Knowledge on fire inspection procedure. Knowledge on firefighting procedures. Knowledge on victim search and rescue procedures. Skills in oral and written communication. Knowledge of Advanced Life Support (ALS) or Basic Life Support (BLS) process. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements: Work requires the ability to perform strenuous physical activity for a long period of time, in an emergency. Activities involve prolonged periods of time standing, walking, bending, crouching, and carrying heavy firefighting tools n excess of 50 pounds and related equipment associated with the performance of such duties as maintenance, testing, inspections, drills, suppression, and transport of persons.
