This incumbent serves as the Supervisory Structural Firefighter in the Fire Section, Public Safety Service at the Battle Creek VA Medical Center (BCVAMC). The BCVAMC is primarily a Neuropsychiatric facility with 360 beds consisting of inpatient, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Substance Abuse, Nursing Home, Palliative Care, and Dementia Units. There are numerous outpatient visits for medical, psychiatric, and geriatric clinics.
Duties
The Supervisory Structural Firefighter provides direct supervision to three 0081-09 Firefighter (Paramedics), one 0081-08 Fire Inspector, and two Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs).
Incumbent operates as the Fire Officer in Charge (OIC) of day-to-day operations which encompasses direct oversight and supervision to three fire engine personnel and four emergency medical service (EMS) staff.
Incumbent works a variable 48 hours on, followed by 48-72 hours off which averages to 144 hours per pay period to accomplish the goals and mission of the BCVAMC. The incumbent will occasionally work voluntary/mandated overtime for staffing purposes.
This individual will provide technical support upon request to medical center supervisors in aspects of fire protection and prevention activities at the medical center.
This position requires the incumbent to be available for recall/call-back (24-hours a day, seven days a week) unless on leave or business travel, for various emergency situations. These situations would include but are not limited to the following: Fire related emergencies, natural disasters, hazardous materials and decontamination operations, pandemic incidents, environmental emergencies, acts of terrorism, activation of the BCVAMC Incident Command Center (ICC), and any other situation or incident that the Medical Center Director, Associate Director, Chief, Public Safety Service, Chief, Fire Section, or Assistant Fire Chief (Training Officer) deems necessary.
Work Schedule: 48 hours on shift, followed by 72 hours off shift.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 05/27/2024.
Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-10 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-9. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. You may qualify based on your experience as described below:
Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-9 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to:
Controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade
Rescue operations
Detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards
Operation of fire communications equipment
Controlling hazardous materials incidents
Developing, implementing, or providing training in fire protection and prevention.
Certifications: (As required by VHA Directive 7718)

Physical Requirements: Work requires the ability to perform strenuous physical activity for a long period of time in emergency situations. Activities involve prolonged periods of time standing, walking, bending, crouching, and carrying heavy firefighting tools in excess of 50 pounds and related equipment associated with the performance of such duties as maintenance, testing, inspections, drills, suppression, and transport of persons. Work also involves the operation of motor vehicles.
