This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service. About the Position: Serve as a Maintenance Mechanic performing journey level repair duties in a variety of trades and crafts areas.

Duties

Repair large air conditioning and heating systems to include individual room units and building mechanical room equipment. Repair smaller equipment such as window air conditioning units, heat pumps, and refrigerators. Troubleshoot and repair all elements of heating units and systems on the installation. Perform electrical work that requires the installation and repair of circuits, panel boxes, circuit breakers, and other such components and equipment. Perform plumbing work involving the installation and repair of equipment such as water closets, pressure-reducing valves, hot water heaters, drinking fountains, and urinals. Apply the full range of carpentry skills and techniques in repairing, constructing, remodeling and maintaining a variety of wooden structures and training devices.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • The incumbent must be able to obtain and maintain a North Carolina or American Water Works Association backflow certification.
  • The incumbent must possess and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator's license.
  • This position is designated as essential during inclement weather.
  • The employee is required to successfully pass physical examinations as required by Federal and Office of Safety and Occupational Health Administration guides.
  • This position is subject to rotating shifts, weekend and or holiday work schedules.

Qualifications

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a Maintenance Mechanic without more than normal supervision. Perform tasks such as servicing and maintaining smaller air conditioning and refrigeration equipment such as window units and refrigerators, as well as heating equipment such as heat pumps; performing preventative maintenance tasks such as cleaning coils, drain pans and drains, and adjusting belts; removing and replacing electrical fixtures and controls, and making repairs such as tightening connections and wrapping exposed wiring with insulating tape; removing, cleaning, replacing, and sealing defective parts of utility, supply, and disposal systems such as dirty traps, sections of broken tile, pipe, and leaky drains; and measuring, cutting, constructing, and repairing wood products. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. In addition to meeting the Minimum Qualifications experience: you must possess the below certification: Certification: Must possess and maintain a Universal (Types I, II and III) Freon handling certification. Physical Effort: Employee works in shops and at job sites. Strenuous physical exertion is often required. Employee may lift and move materials up to 40 pounds, unassisted, and occasionally lifts or moves heavier items with the assistance of lifting devices or other workers. Employee is required to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions for extended periods of time. Employee may work from ladders, scaffolding, and roofs performing the duties of this position. Working Conditions: Work is performed both inside and outside. Employee is exposed to moderate or high noise levels, sawdust, glue fumes, and hazards associated with woodworking and related power equipment when performing work in the shop area. Work at job sites exposes employee to adverse weather conditions and the hazards of working on and around scaffolds and ladders. Employee is subject to cuts, bruises and contusions, electrical shock, cuts, and burns. May be required to work in confined areas such as crawl spaces and attics, which may be dusty and dirty. Protective devices such as, but not limited to, ear plugs, safety glasses, respirators, gloves, and safety shoes may be required. Protective equipment and clothing may be hot and uncomfortable and may be worn for long periods of time.
