Duties

As the primary Legal Assistant (Office Automation) in the Appellate Division you will be responsible for directly and independently supporting Assistant United States Attorneys by providing a wide variety of technical assistance services related to complex civil and/or criminal appeals. Duties include: - Preparing and processing a wide variety of legal documents, many of which are voluminous and complex in format. - Conducting research using various legal and non-legal databases and websites. - Compiling and indexing bibliographies of source material and verifying citations. - Acting as a legal assistance subject matter expert by providing training, guidance, and technical assistance to other legal support staff. - Applying fact-finding techniques to gather appropriate information in conjunction with specific legal issues. - Providing requested information concerning pending and closed matters and cases, functions, and general procedures of the office. Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

Requirements

  • You must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
  • Time-in-Grade: Federal employees must meet time-in-grade requirements within 30 days after the closing date of this announcement.

Qualifications

GS-8: To be eligible at the GS-8 level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-7 level. Specialized experience is defined as experience preparing and processing a variety of technical legal documents which are characteristically voluminous and complex in format (e.g. pleadings, stipulations, motions, briefs, affidavits, complaints, orders and subpoenas); obtaining information from files, law enforcement agencies, or other sources; conducting factual and legal research and providing requested information to attorneys; aiding in the preparation and organization of evidence for use in trial. To be qualified, you must type at least 40 words per minute based on a 5 minute sample with three or fewer errors. (A typing test may later be required.) Interagency Career Transition Assistance Plan (ICTAP)- The ICTAP provides eligible displaced Federal competitive service employees with selection priority over other candidates for competitive service vacancies. If your agency has notified you in writing that you are a displaced employee eligible for ICTAP consideration, you may receive selection priority if: 1) this vacancy is within your ICTAP eligibility; 2) you apply under the instructions in the announcement; and 3) you are found well-qualified for this vacancy.
