The housekeeping aid worker position is located within the Environmental Management Services Division of South Texas VA Medical Center, San Antonio TX. This position performs both janitorial and custodial services (e.g., textile distribution and inventory activity, sanitizing and disinfecting, waste removal, cleaning of blinds, replacing curtains, washing windows and walls, dusting and polishing furniture and fixtures, discharge cleaning, sweeping, scrubbing and extracting, polishing floors).
Duties
The Housekeeping Aid executes a full range of housekeeping activities in patient and non-patient care areas. Typically, the position works independently with general supervision, or works with a team and is responsible for the full-range of cleaning duties in an assigned area throughout the medical facility. These duties include, but are limited to the following:
Perform floor maintenance, wall washing. Clean doors, doorframes, baseboard corners and edges, and stairwells. Tasks are accomplished by sweeping, dust mopping, damp and wet mopping, scrubbing, stripping, refinishing, buffing, vacuuming and extracting carpets and runners, spot cleaning areas, and high and low dusting.
Periodically utilize pressure washers and heavy industrial powered and battery-operated equipment for cleaning. Adjust, clean, and perform minor maintenance on these equipment and change attachments for their proper use in achieving the best results.
Empty trash and wastebaskets, replace liners. Transport general refuse, regulated medical waste and recycling to central collection areas.
Clean rest rooms, bathrooms, and shower rooms, ensuring that they are cleaned and meet acceptable standards (clean, disinfect, and deodorize lavatories, showers, bathtubs, urinals, and toilet bowls; clean mirrors, sink, and water fountain; wash and polish light and toilet fixtures).
Replenish supplies of paper towels, toilet paper, hand sanitizers, and soap in all areas where dispensers are located.
Move and arrange furniture, patient wardrobes, beds, etc. in the assigned area to accomplish cleaning tasks.
Provide bed-making services in patient care areas and OD rooms; clean mattresses, springs, and bed frames; and clean bedside stands, over bed lights, blood pressure cuffs, bed tables, etc. in patient rooms;
Remove bags of soiled textiles from patient rooms and transport to the designated soiled room in each ward area; load and unload clean textiles from bulk carts. Restock clean textile closets, cabinets, shelves, carts, and participate in inventory management activities.
Defrost and clean patient care refrigerators and ice machines in nourishment kitchen areas; clean stainless steel on storage instrument cabinets and counters, elevators in lobbies, wards, diet-kitchens and nurse utility rooms; and clean ashtrays, smoke stands, sand urns in designated smoke areas and water fountains;
Provide interim cleaning of windows and window ledges from the inside, clean glass door and other glass surfaces; and replace curtains and cleans blinds.
Clean and/or replace needle boxes.
Periodically clean specific non-critical Reusable Medical Equipment (RME) in inpatient and clinical areas of the medical center.
Additionally, the position may work with and provide guidance to a Compensated Work Therapy (CWT) worker, and perform other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 3:00pm to 11:30pm

Physical Requirements: Position entails continuous walking, standing, stooping, reaching, lifting, bending, pushing, pulling, climbing and working in limited spaces. Incumbent will be required to perform moderate to heavy lifting (40 to 50 pounds), pushing, pulling and carrying of furniture and equipment. Exposure to various contagion's and infections is a constant hazard as is the danger of cuts and stabs from glass, metal objects and needles found in trash, electrical shocks in equipment and slips on wet floors. Skin rashes and allergies due to strong detergents and disinfectants are possible. Incumbent must work in close proximity to persons who are ill and must adjust accordingly. Work is subject to numerous interruptions by those who are attending or visiting patients.
