This position is located in Christiansted National Historic Site, in the Resource Management Division.

Duties
As a Biological Science Technician (Wildlife), you will perform the following duties:
Assist with natural resource monitoring efforts.
Collects morphologic data on nesting sea turtles, migratory birds, Nassau groupers and other threatened and endangered (T&E) species.
Coordinates logistics and support working relationships with scientists from academic institutions, Territorial and federal agencies and others performing resource status assessments, research studies to improve management and invasive species management/control.
Provides updated sea turtle status information to the larger sea turtle research community.
Communicates with local and regional National Park Service staff, territorial managers and researchers on species status, wildlife management efforts at the parks, and current research project results.
Maintains vessels and vehicles, sea turtle program equipment, and other scientific supplies used for wildlife monitoring work.
Makes field observations of natural resource conditions.
Assists in preparing reports, plans, and guidelines.
Installs, operates, and maintains resource management equipment (e.g., tools, traps, sampling, monitoring, photographic, and laboratory equipment).
Qualifications

SELECTIVE FACTORS: This position performs as a field leader for Sea Turtle Research Programs, and three months of experience assisting or leading a sea turtle program or previous animal handling experience is required. To qualify for this position at the GS-05 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). For this position, specialized experience must have been related to the work of the position for which application is made. The specialized experience required for some positions in this series is normally work performed in a controlled environment. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include: 1) Research activity or control program work; 2) Nursery work that required the growing and maintenance of plants in a controlled environment; and/or 3) Work comparable to that with a large dairy farm where production records, animal environment, and sanitary conditions were kept in accordance with modern dairy practice. You must include hours per week worked on your resume.
NOTE: Farming experience that was not performed in a controlled environment, or experience as a laborer who was not responsible for planning and scheduling his/her own work, but only performed assigned tasks, would not qualify as specialized experience.

EDUCATION: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as: biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics. At least 6 semester hours of courses must have been directly related to the position to be filled. The successful completion of a full course of study of at least 12 months in a school for clinical laboratory technicians may be substituted for the 1 year of specialized experience required at the GS-5 level for positions involving microbiology and biochemistry technician work. You must include a copy of your transcripts.

COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. To combine education and experience, first divide the total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then divide the number of completed post high school semester hours of education, that are in excess of 60 semester hours) by 60. Add the two percentages together; the total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. NOTE: Only post high school education in excess of more than two-years may be used to qualify for this position. You must include a copy of your transcripts.
Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an
accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
