This position is located within the Agricultural Research Service (ARS), Southeast Area, Harry K Dupree Stuttgart National Aquaculture Research Center (HKDSNARC)/Dale Bumpers National Rice Research Center (DBNRRC) in Stuttgart, AR. In this position, you will be responsible for the operation, energy, management, repair, maintenance, and troubleshooting for the Centers facilities and central scientific support equipment, including implementing and overseeing the preventive maintenance program.

Duties

Install, modify, repair, maintain, troubleshoot, test, and load new and existing electric lines, circuits and systems and associated fixtures, controls and equipment. Monitor, design, and manage all effluent waters on facility to meet/exceed Center’s environmental discharge requirements. Perform service calculations for installing electrical services, electric motors, branch circuits and low and high voltage motor controls. Use verbal, written and electronic instructions, shop drawings, blueprints, engineered drawings, and trade formulas to help complete projects. Perform maintenance and repairs on the exterior and interior of the laboratory buildings and other structures. Ensure maintenance required on complex air handling systems is performed in a timely and proper manner to minimize disruption to building operations and research projects. Serve as Contracting Officer’s Representative (COR) on construction, projects and maintenance service contracts for the Center.

Requirements

  • Males born after 12/31/1959 must be Selective Service registered or exempt.

  • A low pressure boiler operator license is required.
  • An Arkansas Pollution Control and Ecology license (Class I Advanced Industrial wastewater treatment license) is required.
  • A Research Demonstration Pesticide Applicators License is required.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid, State-issued motor vehicle operator’s license to operate Government-owned vehicles.
  • Serve as on-call representative during inclement weather and, when required, ensure systems are properly functioning in support of on-going research.

Qualifications

In order to qualify for this position you must meet the following by the closing date of the vacancy announcement: 06/24/2024. While a specific length of time and experience is not required for most Wage Grade positions, you must show through experience and training that you possess the best qualified level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of this position. Qualification requirements emphasize the quality of experience, not necessarily the length. Physical Effort Work requires lifting and carrying objects weighing over 50 pounds and lifting equipment such as pallet jack and hand trucks is available for heavier objects. Work requires bending, stooping, kneeling, standing for extended periods and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions, and using arms for long periods of time using hand tools, power machines, shop tools and equipment. Some reaching and climbing on ladders and scaffolding are required for wok both indoors and outdoors. Working Conditions Works is performed both indoors and outdoors. Outside work often exposes the incumbent to adverse weather conditions, such as extreme heat (95 degrees and above). The incumbent is subject to the usual hazards associated with conducting maintenance work. Incumbent is exposed to environmental and chemical substances including dirt and dust, general laboratory and radiological chemicals and solvents, fumes, gas, grease, oil and degreasers, chlorine and algaecides. Noise levels can be high almost to the extreme requiring earplugs. Must observe all safety regulations and use necessary protective devices and clothing. Occasionally works in contaminated areas and may be exposed to biological hazards when servicing sewer lift stations. Work may expose the incumbent to burns, broken bones, electrical shock, bruises, cuts and scrapes. Due to some hazards, personal protective equipment such as goggles, a respirator, and gloves may be required.
