This position will be assigned to the Library located on JBSA Lackland.
This is a Regular - Full Time category position with guaranteed 35 hours per week and may work up to 40 hours per week. Work schedule varies based on facility needs and includes weekends and/or holidays.
Employees appointed to regular category positions are eligible for benefits.
Duties
Responsible for all circulation service operations. Assists in the training of new library aides and technicians on circulation tasks. Independently performs circulation and registration duties by implementing established procedures for circulation functions. Maintains automated and/or manual circulation files to include all charged-out materials, user database files, registration files, reserves, document delivery, interlibrary loans, lost items, and overdues. Implements established procedures for overdue materials. Makes arrangements with customers for replacement of lost or damaged items, following relevant AFIs and local guidance. Using established procedures, maintains reserve and interlibrary loan services and performs follow-up to ensure all requests are accurately fulfilled. Maintains and compiles library statistics on circulation, attendance, reference questions, and other required and requested data. Provides ready reference services to library customers by locating required information using standard library reference tools, passing more difficult requests to the appropriate staff member. Explains the library classification scheme and general management of library resources to customers. Explains library rules, regulations, circulation procedures, and entitlements to library users. Assists library users with library equipment. Assists the supervisory librarian in developing and implementing programs and the marketing and publicity of library services and events. Prepares displays. Recommends titles for possible inclusion in the collection. Utilizes the Integrated Library System (ILS), online databases, and other Internet resources to prepare subject bibliographies. Performs routine clerical tasks. Picks up, sorts, and distributes library mail. Uses varied and advanced functions of computer software to prepare, format, modify, edit, email and print a variety of letters, reports, memos, and other documents. Assists with the technical services process as needed. Assists in conducting tours and group orientations. Refers difficult questions/problems concerning work processes to the appropriate staff member. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifying Experience:
Specialized experience in a library that provided specific knowledge of library rules, policies, and procedures for circulation and technical service. Ability to read, write, and speak English. Experience or training that demonstrates the ability to perform standard computer skills. Typing experience is required. Work requires some physical exertion such as long periods of standing; recurring activities such as bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, and reaching; pushing loaded book trucks; and recurring lifting of moderately heavy items. Possess skill applying standard customer service practices when dealing with the public.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSA's):Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
1. Knowledge of a body of standardized library rules, procedures, and operations related to one or more library functions such as those used to maintain the collection, locate information, order and process library materials, or assist clientele with inquiries; and library operating policies, circulation procedures, ready reference sources, issuance and cancellation of borrower cards, and resolving recurring problems such as lost or damaged books
2. Knowledge of programs in a general library to conduct special events, locate materials for exhibits on a given theme, and prepare announcements of events and programs for bulletin boards and employee newsletters.
3. Knowledge of general clerical office procedures. Knowledge of one or more word processing automation software functions to support office operations and produce a variety of textual documents, such as letters, reports, memos, and form letters. Skill in typing, a qualified typist is required.
4. Knowledge of one or more automated databases associated with a specific library function to support office and library operations and produce a variety of documents and reports.
5. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with a diverse group of individuals, using a high degree of tack and diplomacy.
