This Intermediate Care Technician position is in Surgical services at the Providence VA Medical Center), located at the Providence, RI location. This position is full time/40 hours a week.

Duties

The Intermediate Care Technician (ICT) Generalist is assigned to the Department of Veteran Affairs, Veterans Health Administration (VHA). This position serves as an advance technician for outpatient care settings such as; primary care, mental health, and specialty clinics. As an ICT Generalist the incumbent may serve in a medical center, community-based outpatient clinic (CBOC), mobile medical unit or may have virtual/remote assignments. Duties include but not limited to: Performs observation-based screening and collecting patient information in collaboration with licensed personnel. Completes clinical reminders. Obtains patient health history, chief complaints, medication history, and identification of health-related conditions that may impact the patient's health status. Completes approved templates and tools, such as the outpatient intake form, normal result notes, and follow up treatment protocols established by the agency. Assists in behavioral/psychiatric situations in an outpatient setting. Assists licensed personnel with crisis intervention, management of aggressive or suicidal psychiatric patients, by providing one-to-one observations and applying prevention and management of disruptive behavior techniques (PMDB). Performs duties focused on communication techniques required to complete the questioners and templates approved for use in any outpatient clinical setting, including active listening, restating, and mirroring. Maintains a safe and therapeutic environment for the patient while promoting a sense of worth and dignity under the supervision of the licensed personnel. Assists outpatient licensed staff with the delivery of care to patients with complex, specialized, and potentially life-threatening situations. Assists licensed staff with preparing patients for medical evaluation, setting up equipment, passing instruments and providing treatment during in-person or virtual visits. Operates specialized medical equipment to obtain diagnostic and therapeutic outcomes. Promotion Potential: The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level. In some cases, more than one SF-50 may be required to show a higher grade previously held. This position is in the Competitive Service.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. GS-06 grade level: One year of specialized experience (GS-05) experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes: Assists with completion of patient screening and observation-based screening and collection of patient information Assists with Specimen Collection and Preparation. Examples: collecting and labeling samples and mucous specimens. Monitors and oversees storage of sterile of equipment and surgical instrumentation. Proficient in assisting with minor procedures, treatments, and interventions in all Surgical Specialty Areas. Examples: incision and drainage, foley catheter insertion, cystoscopy, and nasopharyngeal scopes. Proficient in assisting with both wound care and post op care. Examples: bandaging, application of dry sterile dressings wound measurements, or suture removal. Sets up and using medical equipment to obtain diagnostic and therapeutic outcomes. Assists with patient exams and screening. Examples: vital signs, 12-lead electrocardiogram (EKG). OR Education: Successfully completed one half (½) year of graduate education (9 semester hours or equivalent) with a major that included courses directly related to the position. Such graduate education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. NOTE: Transcripts (unofficial or official) must be submitted with your application materials. Education cannot be credited without documentation OR Combination: Equivalent combination of successfully completed graduate-level education and specialized experience, as described above, which meet the total qualification requirements for this grade level. This education must have been obtained at an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college, or university. NOTE: Your experience must be documented in your resume and transcripts are required. GS-07 grade level: One year of specialized experience (GS-06) experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes:Independently completes patient screening and performs observation-based screening and collection of patient information Independently completes specimen Collection and Preparation. Examples: collecting and labeling samples and mucous specimens. Expertise in assisting with minor procedures, treatments, and interventions in all Surgical Specialty Areas. Examples: incision and drainage, foley catheter insertion, cystoscopy, and nasopharyngeal scopes. Expertise in assisting with wound care and post op care. Examples: bandaging, application of dry sterile dressings wound measurements, or suture removal. Expertise in setting up and using medical equipment to obtain diagnostic and therapeutic outcomes. Assists with patient exams and screening. Examples: vital signs, 12-lead electrocardiogram (EKG). Monitors and oversees storage of sterile of equipment and surgical instrumentation. Responsible for Clinic Clean Sweeps and assisting nurse manage with Environment of Care Rounds Responsible for reviewing upcoming outpatient clinic profiles to ensure optimal clinic flow. Participates in Quality Improvement Activities OR Education: Successfully completed one (1) year of graduate education or internship directly related to the position. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent one (1) year of full-time study. If that number cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours will be considered an academic year of graduate study. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended. (COPY OF OFFICIAL OR UNOFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED) OR Combination: Equivalent combinations of creditable specialized experience and education as described above to meet the total experience requirements for the position. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. Only education beyond a one-half year (e.g. 6 months; 9 semester hours) of graduate level education may be used to qualify applicants for the GS-07 level. NOTE: If using education combined with specialized experience to qualify, a copy of your transcript is required. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements: The work requires a level of physical fitness that allows for standing for extended periods, heavy lifting to position patients, and manual dexterity to perform clinical procedures. The work will require recurrent bending, lifting, stooping, standing, squatting, stretching, sitting and walking.
