Duties
The CDC utilizes Direct/Expedited Hire Authorities to fill vacancies in a variety of occupations. This vacancy is a REPOSITORY of applications. Duties and responsibilities vary and may increase according to the grade level of the position. Applications may be periodically referred to hiring managers both during the open period and after the closing date. Because of the large number of applications anticipated, applicants' status will not be updated.
This public notice will be used to fill the positions listed below at multiple grade levels and locations.
Chemist: Grades GS-11 through GS-15
Applicant Expiration: Applications will expire 4 months after submission/resubmission. To remain eligible for consideration, reapplying is required.
Duties may include but are not limited to:
Working within an area of primary interest in the field of chemistry or biochemistry.
Identifying, defining, and selecting specific problems for review, study and determining what appear to be the most fruitful investigations and approaches to the problem area.
Formulating hypotheses and developing and carrying out the review of chemical studies, coping with novel, difficult, and unexpected problems.
Working with few guidelines due to the novel character of the work.
Qualifications
Basic Qualifications:
Degree: physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics.
or
Combination of education and experience: course work equivalent to a major as shown above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
Minimum Qualifications:
GS-11:
At least 3 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree OR
At least 1 year of specialized experience, equivalent to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service, to include experience applying applicable regulations and procedures in a laboratory setting by performing a variety of chemical and clinical analyses of samples, to include the operation of technical instrumentation including mass spectrometers OR
A combination of education & experience
GS-12:
At least 1 year of specialized experience, equivalent to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service, to include experience applying applicable regulations and procedures in a laboratory setting by independently performing chemical analysis in a variety of sample matrices; and operating, calibrating, maintaining analytical instruments including mass spectrometers
GS-13:
At least 1 year of specialized experience, equivalent to the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service, to include experience developing and carrying out the review of chemical studies in the field of chemistry or biochemistry to identify and solve problems
GS-14:
At least 1 year of specialized experience, equivalent to the GS-13 grade level in the Federal service, to include experience providing scientific leadership in formulating, developing, implementing, and evaluating programs and activities related to emergency readiness of public health laboratory systems
GS-15:
At least 1 year of specialized experience, equivalent to the GS-14 grade level in the Federal service, to include experience developing clinical inorganic analytical chemistry methods, biomonitoring of inorganic chemical biomarkers in clinical samples; and directing the work of research staff and scientists.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Promotion potential: Promotion to the next grade level is at management's discretion and is based on your meeting qualifications and time-in-grade requirements, demonstrated ability to perform the higher-level duties, the continuing need for the higher-level duties, and administrative approval. Promotion to the next grade level is not guaranteed and no promise of promotion is implied.
