The position is in the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), Food and Drug Administration, Office of Regulatory Affairs, (ORA), Office of Regulatory Science (ORS), Human and Animal Food Laboratory Operations (OHAFLO), Arkansas Human and Animal Food Laboratory (ARLHAF). The ORS provides strategic leadership, coordination, infrastructure, and support for FDA science.

Duties

Plans, organizes, and directs the activities of the laboratory unit. Provides occupational specific technical direction to subordinate scientists by using creative application of scientific principles. Plans and makes recommendations on the future needs in the scientific specialty area such as new analytical instruments, techniques, and methods. Balances workload and provides advice, guidance, and direction on a wide range of public health and regulatory science affairs.

Qualifications

The position of Supervisory Interdisciplinary Scientist falls within the 0401/0403/1320 occupational series. To qualify for this position at grade GS-14, you must meet Time-in-Grade requirements by 11:59 pm EST on 06/12/2024. Time-in-Grade: Any individual who is currently holding, or has held within the previous 52 weeks, a General Schedule position under non-temporary appointment in the competitive or excepted service, must meet time-in-grade requirements (must have served 52 weeks at the next lower grade or equivalent in the Federal service). Time-in-grade requirements must be met by the closing date of this announcement. GS-14: Applicants must have 52 weeks at the GS-13 grade level or higher in the Federal service. Minimum Qualifications: Biology Series: Bachelor or higher in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. OR A combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Microbiology Series: Bachelor or higher in microbiology; or biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms, and 20 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences combining course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or their equivalent. OR A combination of education and experience-- courses equivalent to a major in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included courses as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Chemistry Series: Bachelor or higher in physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics. OR A combination of education and experience--course work equivalent to a major shown above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience, or additional education. AND Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. The specialized experience must demonstrate one year of full-time work experience , or the equivalent if part-time (for example, an employee working 20 hours per week for a 12-month period should be credited with 6 months of experience.) Experience may have been obtained in either the federal service or its equivalent with state or local government, the private sector, or nongovernmental organizations. GS-14: You must have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-13, in the Federal service, which includes: planning, organizing and directing the activities of a laboratory unit; providing advice, guidance, and technical direction on public health and regulatory science affairs; identifying and setting budget requirements; using scientific principles to develop processes and procedures for sample processing and handling. In accordance with Office of Personnel Management policy, federal employees are assumed to have gained experience by performing duties and responsibilities appropriate for their official series and grade level as described in their position description. Experience that would not normally be part of the employee's position is creditable, however, when documented by satisfactory evidence, such as a signed memorandum from the employee's supervisor or an SF-50 or SF-52 documenting an official detail or other official assignment. The documentation must indicate whether the duties were performed full time or, if part time, the percentage of times the other duties were performed. FOREIGN EDUCATION
