About the Position: As an Ammunition Inspector you will serve in a developmental capacity receiving on-the-job and formal training and performing progressively more difficult and responsible assignments and upon management approval, promotion to the WG-09, to the full performance WG-10.
Duties
Conduct visual, chemical, mechanical, functional, static, and/or dimensional tests in workshop, at storage location, at designated inspection station on processing line, or on test range, as required by the particular activity with which engaged.
Independently perform inspections of storage sites for non-standard and hazardous methods of storing ammunition and components.
Test lightning protection systems by performing megger tests and record findings.
Operate electrical test equipment and use a wide variety of gauges to check for required tolerances.
Inspect conveyances carrying incoming/outgoing ammunition shipments for damage, proper lot numbers, compatibility of contents and compliance with associated directives and regulations.
Set up and operate specialized Ammunition Peculiar Equipment, dismantling complete rounds into components for inspecting and testing.
Operate forklift, pneumatic hoists, and pallet jacks to support sample movements.
Observe and inspect the demolition of high-explosive and explosive components, the burning of powder, and the destruction of ammunition at the demolition and burning ranges.
Disassemble and breakdown ammunition items by operating a variety of machines, equipment, and fixtures.
Use computer systems on a day-to-day basis for data entry purposes.
Perform hazardous waste management and/or hazardous waste worker duties in permitted or regulated facilities.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Subject to random drug testing requirements. This is in accordance with AR 600-85.
- Position subject to the 1996 Lautenberg Amendment to the Gun Control Act of 1968.
- Must obtain and maintain all required ammunition certification requirements as required by the Career Program.
- Required to obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License.
- Must obtain and maintain a license to operate a forklift.
- Required to pass a physical examination prior to employment and periodically thereafter.
- Position requires Secret security clearance.
- Must be cleared in accordance with requirements of AR 190-11. Physical Security of Arms, Ammunition, and Explosives (AA and E).
- Must meet the requirements of AMCR 350-4. Training and Certification Program for personnel working in ammunition operations.
- Required to successfully complete training in hazardous waste management procedures within (6) months of appointment and will not work in unsupervised situations until training requirements are met. Must participate in annual review of training.

However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.
Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Ammunition Inspector ~ without more than normal supervision. Experience assisting in conducting inspections of all types of ammunition, missiles and similar materials and/or conducting cyclic inspections on lightning protection system (LPS) for all structures that maintain and store explosives. Assisting in performing function tests on various high explosives and munitions. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
PHYSICAL EFFORT: Work involves lifting and carrying of items weighing up to 45 pounds; working on production lines at rhythmic pace for extended periods; moving and replacing components; loading and unloading items, etc., including standing, reaching, bending, stooping, and manipulating parts, and using machines and hand tools.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Work inside and outside; and is subject to extreme weather conditions and exposure to dirt, grease, and noise from machinery. Works with and in close proximity to unusually hazardous materials; may require use of a respirator due to odors or fumes. Must exercise extreme care to prevent fires, explosions, etc., that could result in serious injury, dismemberment, and/or loss of life to self-and/or other workers. Subject to hazards resulting from operation of industrial and production equipment, from assembly operations, or from working around powered conveyors, etc., where accidents could result in serious injury. Is required to wear protective clothing which is specially made and treated for working on and around explosives (safety shoes, glasses, gas masks, coveralls, etc.
